Castles, Churches and Cathedrals

…of Canterbury, Córdoba, Cong, Colmar and Carcassonne to name a few

Ashford Castle, Cong, Ireland (All photos are mine)

I didn’t realize what a penchant I have for cathedrals and churches because I’m not a particularly religious person but I also love mosques and temples so what does that say about me?

I always knew I loved castles. My very favourite castle is Gruyères Castle in Switzerland and my next favourite would be the Haut-Koenigsbourg Castle in Alsace, France. Ashford Castle in Cong, Ireland would be next. What do all of these castles have in common? Can you guess?

I didn’t realise how obsessed I am with cathedrals and churches — I have hundreds of photos! I’ve just chosen a few to show here.

Coincidentally, some of the cathedrals are also in C towns — Canterbury Cathedral and Córdoba Cathedral are two that come to mind.

St Patrick’s Cathedral, Dublin
Bunratty Castle, Ireland
Ashford Castle, Cong, Ireland

All of the above photos were taken on my motorhome trip around Ireland. I haven’t included Blarney Castle or the Rock of Cashel. I love Bunratty Castle as it has the original Bunratty village attached. I’ve visited it three times — funny how I keep coming back to places I love!

The Cathedral of Notre Dame, Strasbourg

Some of these cathedrals are so huge it’s difficult to get a decent photo (and I’m not a good photographer which doesn’t help) but believe me the details are amazing! When you think they were built many centuries ago without the engineering knowledge and tools we have today, I just gape in awe. As my sister once said when visiting Yorkminster Cathedral for the first time, “Look what men could do back in the fifteen hundreds. Today they can’t even make us a decent cup of tea.”

We were inside the Cathedral and there was a service being conducted. I had to stifle my giggles.

Church in Kehl, Germany
Cathedral in Colmar, France
Castle walls at Carcassonne, France
We stayed in this castle at Bussaco, Portugal.
The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes ( outside and inside)
Alexander Nevsky Cathedral in Tallinn

This was one of my favourites in Tallinn. There were at least three other churches St Olaf’s, St Mary’s and St Nicholas’. Their steeples were handy landmarks to find my way around the Old Town.

St Basil’s Moscow — it’s actually much more colourful in real life. I had my camera setting on my iPhone to vivid brown — I don’t know how!
This was the beautiful colourful Armenian Church in Red Square.
This is Hever Castle where Anne Boleyn grew up. I went into her bedroom!
Canterbury Cathedral — beautiful in its simplicity
Hallgrimskirkja, Reyjkavik, Iceland
Córdoba Cathedral is built inside the mosque called the Mesquite.

These are just a tiny portion of the number of castles and cathedrals and churches I’ve visited. Are castles and churches and cathedrals on your itinerary?

Did you guess what my three favourite castles have in common?
