The New York Post has linked one of my articles.
Case Study: How One Old Article Can Suddenly Get Hundreds Of External Views
How my article about a serial killer suddenly shot through the roof.
Last night I looked at my medium statistics and was completely surprised. So far, the day with the most views of this month was May 23rd, with 390 views. This day was already a big success for me.
But yesterday, May 26th, shortly before Midnight I had an unbelievable 767 views. At least it was unbelievabe for me.

That was almost twice as many views as on my best day so far.
I immediately assumed that one of my articles must have been linked from an external source. Traffic inside Medium doesn’t just explode from one day to the next.
Since I have now published 248 articles and many comments on Medium, it took me a while to find the piece that brought the extra traffic. It was this one:
Since I write thrillers about serial killers, I have also written a few articles about famous serial killers on Medium in the past.
These are the stats for this article:

A look at the traffic sources told me that suddenly a lot of traffic came from Google. Also, a total of 227 views came from two different URLs of the New York Post.

I copied one of the links into my browser and pressed enter. I ended up with this article:
I ended up with this article. The headline was Foot fetishist arrested after stealing, having sex with 100 pairs of flip-flops.
I know the headline is terrible. But hey, I didn’t write it.
So I skimmed the article to find out where the link to my article was.
I found it at the end of the fourth paragraph.

So the mystery was solved. One of the most prominent tabloid newspapers in the United States had linked one of my articles.
I never thought it would happen. I’m a little writer from Germany who I’m sure no one in the United States had ever heard of. Apart from that, it would be improbable that even a German newspaper would link me.
But it has happened. Now I also understood the suddenly so much increased traffic from Google. A quick Google search for the keyword “Shoe-Fetish Slayer” showed that my article was in third place after two Wikipedia articles.
Apparently, the combination of the link authority of Medium and the New York Post caused my article on Google to suddenly shoot up on the first page of search results.
So because of the article in the Post, my piece benefits not only directly, but also indirectly. Apparently, a lot of people are looking for this serial killer on Google. Maybe they all want to write an article about him. Who knows.
I’ll see what effects this lucky circumstance has on the long term. Anyway, today, day two, after the release, the traffic flood continues. The article in the Post will surely be forgotten tomorrow, but the Google placement may remain for a long time. Therefore my article about this serial killer could bring me a lot of traffic for a long time.
