Caring is kindness — loneliness is not a guest.

Giving Back To The Community

The Liverpool football team visits Alder Hey Children’s Hospital every Christmas, making a massive impact on the spirits of the patients.

While not all the patients are football fans or support Liverpool, the photos capture genuine happiness, seen through the beaming smiles of those involved.

Some of the patients’ parents mentioned that having a photograph taken with someone they would probably never see up close again made their kids’ day.

You don’t have to be a celebrity to make someone’s day and bring them happiness. You simply need to be kind and considerate, like the volunteers at the hospital who dedicate themselves most days of the year. Their work might not grab the headlines, but it’s worth a million dollars.

Kids clean up and knock on doors.

While living in London, I worked for an organisation called the London Federation of Boys Clubs, which underwent a name change to the London Federation of Youth Clubs to welcome girls.

During Christmas, we used to take the kids into the community to clean up streets and parks. We also used to knock on the doors of the elderly and ask if they needed any assistance.

We never informed the children of the specific day we were going out, as it would likely result in the kids staying at home! Kids do not like to walk or tidy up!

I shared stories of my past outings at their age, mentioning how I’ve always enjoyed meeting people and chatting away, even when I was young.

What these kids didn’t realize was that some people have nobody to talk to. One lady mentioned she hadn’t spoken to or seen anyone in over two weeks. She was genuinely glad to see me, and we had a lengthy conversation. Even my club leader thought I had wandered off or gone home.

Kids moaning

I shared with the kids that even just being there could brighten someone’s day and bring them joy.

However, the children consistently had a list of concerns: first, fibbing about needing to call their mum, to which I swiftly assured them that their mums were already in the loop. Got you!

Next, they fretted about potential encounters with friends, and I attempted to calm their slight meltdown by emphasizing the value of their excellent deed over friend-spotting.

Then came their grumbles about, feeling as if they were parading a shopping trolley behind their mum at the market, fearing their friends’ laughter.

This back-and-forth continued for quite a few minutes. Until I explained to them how happy those people would be and how good they would feel afterward.

A trail of happiness

Two hours later, our visits concluded, leaving behind a trail of happiness among many. It was a revelation for the kids, a moment when they grasped their ability to make a difference, irrespective of their fame.

Bringing happiness to others doesn’t demand fame.

Merry Christmas to those who celebrate it, and joyful holidays to everyone else.
