Caring for Your Alcoholic: You Don’t Have to Do It Alone

The disease of alcoholism impacts more than just the person who is alcohol- dependent and many lives can be significantly disrupted.

The far-reaching effects of the progressive disease often extend into the lives of the alcoholic’s family and loved ones.

The Suffering of Society

When destructive or criminal behavior occurs as a result of frequent, excessive alcohol consumption, society suffers through the potential loss of innocent life, property damage, and costs associated with public safety and judiciary expenses.

Alcoholism is a progressive disease and, in its most serious circumstances, can be fatal if the sufferer’s alcoholic behavior is not identified, treated, and arrested.

However, sometimes the person who suffers from alcoholism doesn't recognize the signs and symptoms of their condition and they are often resistant to intervention efforts of family and friends.

As I’ve witnessed firsthand, it can be frustrating and heartbreaking to watch a loved one suffer through alcoholism.

Personal Decline and Deterioration

Personal circumstances such as deterioration of health, legal problems, and loss of a career are often associated with the advanced stages of alcoholism.

Those who care for a person who is alcohol-dependent can feel helpless as the alcoholic continues to experience the disastrous effects of chronic alcoholism.

It is important for a person who cares about an alcoholic to remember that once a person has become alcohol-dependent, the ability to control the frequency and quantity of alcohol consumption is lost.

Empathy, Strength and Consequence

Gaining an understanding of alcoholism through research and professional guidance is strongly recommended to fully comprehend the complicated nature of the disease.

Learning and acquiring this knowledge will help the friends and family members of the alcoholic structure their lives in such a way that will provide support and create an environment that is conducive to recovery.

Those who are burdened and physically dependent on alcohol often develop defense mechanisms that can make it difficult for loved ones to intervene and initiate sobriety.

Structure and consequences must be imposed on the alcoholic who engages in destructive behavior.

The suffering alcohol-dependent person will often only seek treatment and sobriety when they are ready.

Without structure and consequences, alcoholics typically have little motivation or incentive to consider treatment or recovery.

I can personally attest to the fact that it is the relentless, loving support and consequences that will ultimately change their thought process toward a willingness to seek sobriety.

Seek Help and Gain Support

It is critical for those who care for a person who is suffering from the difficult disease of alcoholism to gain the support of others.

Professional, empathetic assistance is recommended for guidance into effective methods of intervention and initiation of recovery.

With a strong support system and guidance of experienced professionals, the loved ones of an alcoholic can be confident that sobriety can be achieved and lives restored.

I’ve written much more on the negative effects of excessive alcohol consumption.
