Advantages of being locked in a moving vehicle

I must not make any sudden moves or look in her direction. I set the radio’s volume for distraction and background. I am waiting, waiting. I casually ask about her week coming up. I give no pressure to answer. Trapped, buckled in, and nowhere near our destination, we relax.

She chats about this semester’s classes, upcoming assignments, and work goals. Some concerns are shared. I fight the urge to give a solution without choices. We deliberate possible steps to address her concerns. Passing through this moment with a little more ease for her and a little less worry for me.
