Car Ride with a Narcissist
a poem inspired by past events
Amazed at the little oxygen needed Words words words
Exboyfriend #30 deserved it Backpacking in Europe for four months
Words words words Take these vitamins take these things Herself herself herself
I could be a wall to bounce her word tennis balls off of and back to her again and again
refilling her endless well be careful not to look
too long at your reflection in the pool
I could be an audience of one as she twirls and dances and performs on stage
I’m see through Or a mirror
I could be anyone
She doesn’t ask about me Or want to actually have a conversation
It’s one way It’s her time to hear herself talk
The story on repeat Like a spider
I’m the fly this time I try to make listening sounds
I’m captive after all I say something
That I think is relevant and that someone would say in a conversation But this isn’t what that is
She dismisses it Talks on
Her Exboyfriend#30 is crazy and needy and brought her flowers I stare out the window and think
Sir you really dodged a bullet with this one And send him empathy and positive vibes wherever he is now
Hoping it’s far away and hoping that my ride
My time as prisoner Is almost over
