Capturing Nature’s Resilience When the Birds Take a Break

© Deborah Kunzie Photographer — Water Hemlock

In the heart of a scorching Florida summer there are days when even the birds seem to retreat into the shadows, seeking solace from the relentless heat.

I’ve come to learn that nature has its own rhythm, and on these sweltering afternoons, the air is still, and the usual symphony of chirps and tweets takes a temporary hiatus.

Yet, as any photographer will tell you, adaptability is the key to unlocking the beauty hidden in the seemingly mundane. So on days when my avian friends take a siesta, or go into hiding I turn my lens turns towards a different stage — the vibrant dance of plants and blooms that continue to flourish despite the oppressive temperatures.

I’ve come to appreciate the subtle poetry of the plant kingdom. There is certainty plenty to explore. To make them take on a artistic look, proper lighting is needed. So I wait until I can achieve a favorable shot.

I love to wander around in the hammocks and wetlands here looking for anything that catches my eye. The dew on the petals, the light coming through trees or a plant leaning towards the blue sky or in the case of the first photo, a dark background was the intended look.

Most of the botanical images I have in my portfolio were taken out in the wild but I do have many from my own yard.
