Canyon Music

Soul connections to land

Since ancient times the Rooga people lived in the canyons carved through the mesas. Everything they needed was either in the canyons or just above the canyons. Life was not hard and there was always plenty of time for celebration and for contemplating life.

Each generation had their holy persons — both male and female — who kept the spiritual traditions alive and who taught new generations the wisdom of the ancient ones.

Eventually a holy man named Shantu had visions of a time to come in which the lives of the Rooga would be threatened by other people coming from far away. The people became worried.

Now the canyons are empty and the Rooga are gone. There were just a handful left who had managed to hide from the invaders for some years but eventually even these few died out.

But if one walks deep into these canyons and sits in meditation, the lingering vibrations of these ancient people can be felt. On certain nights their songs can still be faintly heard echoing off the canyon walls. Their spirits return to the canyons as though time does not exist. Was it these spirits who went back and warned Shantu?

Now there is no one to warn, no one to tell of a distant future in which the Rooga will return to the canyons in the bodies of a different people. Escaping a world torn asunder, these new people will reconnect to the spirit of the canyons and some of them will be able to hear the songs of the ancients and they will awaken the canyons to new life.

These new people will be the seventh group of people to inhabit the canyons in the tens of thousands of years since humans first lived there. Souls were repeatedly called back by the canyons. Each time they returned they had different names. Often, the songs they heard echoing off the canyon walls were the songs they had themselves once sung.
