Canoeing in Cypress Gardens
A photo travel story

Cypress Gardens is a 175-acre swamp wildlife and nature preserve in Moncks Corner, South Carolina. We visited in 2013 and spent a wonderful day exploring this beautiful park.

The gardens were originally a freshwater reserve for the nearby rice plantation, Dean Hall. We rented a swamp boat canoe and paddled along a marked trail in hopes of spotting alligators. We did see a few birds and turtles, but no alligators in the wild.

I can still remember the peacefulness of the boat ride. We didn’t speak out loud but only in whispers to each other. We floated and barely used the oars only when we had to. The water was so calm the day we were there. It was one of the best experiences ever.
I can still see the scene from the movie “The Notebook” that was filmed here. It truly was a magical experience.

If you don’t want to boat through the swamp, there are 3.5 miles of walking trails that loop through the swamp and gardens. But the signs warn of alligators on the trails. I think I would rather be in a boat than on a trail if I were going to run into an alligator.

There is also a Butterfly House for observing the different stages of a butterfly’s life cycle. Did you know there is a butterfly named Julia? I didn’t until I saw it here.

There is a Swamparium, where large tanks feature fish, amphibians, turtles, alligators, and other reptiles native to the South Carolina Lowcountry. This is the only time we saw alligators during our visit.

These amazing gardens were used in several movies, including scenes from The Notebook, Cold Mountain, and The Patriot. I love to visit places where movies were filmed and then go back and watch the movie to see if I can find the scenes where they were filmed.

I hope you enjoyed my photo story and exploring Cypress Gardens with me.
