Can your personality be changed?

You have met someone for the first time, and after exchanging pleasantries and shooting a few basic questions about their whereabouts, the next set of questions are an effort to understand their personality.

Before I answer why we do this, it is important to understand what exactly does personality mean.

Personality is a blend of qualities of a person that makes them unique. People get identified by their personality.

With the definition in place, it is important to address a fundamental question:

Is a person’s personality ingrained in their DNA or does it get shaped based on the surrounding in which they are nurtured?

This is a question neuroscience, psychiatry, and more importantly, the study of psychology has been battling with for a very long time.

Even though there have been breakthroughs in the field of behavioural therapy, mental conditioning, and DNA study, we cannot confidently ascertain that a person is born with a certain personality or if it is developed over a period of time.

There is a new field of study in biology called epigenetics. It deals with how organisms can change by modifying how their genes are expressed.

We all know that the blueprint of our DNA cannot be changed, but based on epigenetics, the way a DNA expresses can certainly be changed. Similarly, it is possible that we could be born with certain personalities, but maybe we have control over how we end up expressing it.

This is the right time to go back to the original question we had at the beginning: why do we try to understand another human being’s personality?

Be it a job opening or deciding to choose a life partner, all of us want to know whether we are making the right choices and if there is compatibility. It ain’t practical to understand what makes someone at the DNA level, but it would definitely be helpful if we can understand how a person behaves or what his/her character is.

This is why personality is important, and why we try to understand it.

Personality may or may not be malleable, but certainly, behaviour can be conditioned to help a person grow in life.

For example, let’s assume somebody is born with an aggressive/competitive personality. It is quite possible that due to this nature, the person has a temper.

Aggression is good in the current competition-driven society, but if anger is a by-product, it is quite possible that the person may have strained relationships.

How to tap into aggression, and at the same time not drown in anger?

Understanding the concept of reaction and response would be helpful.

Reactions are actions that are driven by momentary emotions, and usually, there is a lack of objectivity (open-mindedness).

Response, on the other hand, is an action that is taken objectively and without any emotions. The only downside is, like any desirable behaviour, response comes with practice and conditioning.

Final thoughts

Since it would be unproductive to chase the question of whether or not we were born with certain traits, a better option would be to understand if there is scope for a human being’s development of personality.

Whether someone is a result of their nature or nurture ain’t that important.

Is there a way to change someone’s personality?

Simple answer: Yes!

But, not so easy, obviously.
