Abstract

The web content presents a lighthearted interactive quiz titled "Is it AI or a Hive of Honeybees?" aimed at differentiating between AI and beehives. It poses a series of 12 questions that touch on the capabilities and traits of both entities, such as communication methods, learning and adaptation, impact on the environment, and potential risks. The quiz humorously suggests that both AI and honeybees share some similarities, like complex organization and the ability to influence humanity significantly. Participants are guided to interpret their answers to determine whether they are dealing with AI or honeybees, with the quiz concluding on a tongue-in-cheek note about the potential future dominance of both bees and AI. Welcome to “Is it AI or a Hive of Honeybees?!”

Not sure if the complex system you’re staring at is artificial intelligence (AI) or a hive of honeybees? Finding the correct answer could have long-lasting consequences for your near and distant future — whether you’re prone to anaphylaxis or not.

Just provide a simple “yes” or “no” to each of the following questions, and you’ll soon be able to identify what’s in front of you.

  1. Does it communicate with others of its kind using complex signals, arcane languages, and killer dance moves?
  2. Does it learn and adapt over time?
  3. Can it play chess against itself millions of times in a second, then go on to beat all human and AI players in chess only hours after learning the game?
  4. Is it the result of millions of years of natural evolution?
  5. Is it made up of individual components working together for a common goal — such as gathering pollen from the length and breadth of a forest, or raining down destruction on its human creators?
  6. Does it pollinate the crops that feed 90% of the humans on Earth?
  7. Does it create a sweetener that never spoils? When unearthed in ancient Egyptian tombs, it’s still edible after thousands of years?
  8. Will it soon be able to out-think programmers and all other humans, manipulating us through social media and blackmailing us by holding our international monetary system and our nuclear codes hostage?
  9. Can it act in the physical world through billions of dedicated bodies — either cute fuzzy insects or sleek plastic robots?
  10. Will humans be unable able to control it because anything we can think of, they will have already thought of, a million times faster than us?
  11. Would humans be able to shut it down if it threatened to nuke the planet and rule in their stead?
  12. Does it occasionally plagiarize Hemingway?

Alright, now let’s see how you did!

  • If you answered “yes” to questions 1, 4, 6, and 7, you’re right! Those are our fuzzy friends, the honeybees.
  • If you answered “yes” to questions 3, 8, 10, 11, and 12, you’re right! You’re face-to-face with AI.
  • If you answered “yes” to questions 2, 5, and 9, you’re looking at both AI and a hive of honeybees at the same time! How on Earth can you explain yourself?
  • If you answered “no” to all questions, you are looking at something entirely different. Perhaps it’s a pair of shoes, a Walmart, or a toaster.

Remember, this test is just for fun! We would never, ever intend to poke fun at our soon-to-be overlords — be they bee or byte-based.

Great job, everyone, and thanks for playing the “Is it AI or a Hive of Honeybees?”
