Summary

An individual tested the feasibility of becoming a full-time writer on Medium during a 20-day vacation, significantly increasing their writing time and earnings, but concluded that while possible, relying solely on Medium income is risky due to its fluctuating nature.

Abstract

In December, the author experimented with full-time writing on Medium, dedicating 5–6 hours daily to writing and promoting articles, which resulted in a tripled income compared to their usual part-time effort. Despite earning around $210 after taxes, the author acknowledges this is insufficient for a month's living expenses. The author's follower count surged by approximately 1500, indicating potential for further growth if not for returning to a full-time job in January. While the author believes sustained effort over several months could significantly increase Medium earnings, they caution against full reliance on Medium due to income variability. The recommendation is to invest Medium earnings and continue writing to supplement income over time.

Opinions

  • The author is optimistic about the potential for increased income on Medium with more dedicated time and effort.
  • There is a recognition that the income earned from Medium in December, while tripled, is not enough to live on for a month.
  • The author suggests that a steady increase in followers and income is possible with consistent full-time writing on Medium.
  • The author expresses skepticism about the stability of Medium income, advising that it should be considered supplemental rather than a sole source of income.
  • The author encourages reinvesting Medium earnings and views writing on Medium as a long-term investment that could eventually replace a portion of one's salary.

Can You Quit Your Job and Become a Writer on Medium full time?

I can say that in December I tested the possibility of becoming a full time writer on Medium, this was due to the fact that I was on vacation from work for more than 20 days.

I had ended up spending around 5–6 hours a day on Medium just writing articles and trying to promote them as best I could on social media. This made me earn around $300 in December, which after taxes is about $210.

It’s true that this money I can’t afford to live for a month, but what was worth considering was that spending 5–6 hours instead of 1–2 hours as I normally do I managed to earn about 3x more money.

My follower count grew by almost 1500 in December and probably would have continued to grow at the same rate if it wasn’t for the beginning of January when I started the job.

For me it was just a month when I decided to dedicate myself completely on Medium, but I’m sure if I had at least a few months the income would have really increased considerably.

Considering the fact that income on Medium can fluctuate every month it is very hard to believe that you can become a full time writer on Medium. What you can do, however, is to invest every penny you earn, keep writing articles, increase your income on Medium and maybe in a few years a part of your salary will be provided by Medium.
