Can you have more than one Medium Partner Program account?

To niche or not to niche, that is the question.

When I started out writing on Medium back in August, I dumped everything I wrote into one account.

I would cover everything from sobriety, to success, to passive income, to NHL hockey, to handicapping Brazilian election outcomes.

It was too much.

As I realized that, for that account anyway (James Julian), people were gravitating to my sobriety and success writing, I decided I needed to niche down.

I didn’t want people who really valued that content to become a referred member or subscribe to receive email updates, and then be turned off by my thoughts on Bitcoin trading.

Adding another Medium Partner Program account

The only problem was, every Google search I did to find out if you’re allowed to have more than one Medium Partner Program account turned up crickets.

So I fired off an email to Medium support. I wrote:

Hi there,

I just have a quick question: Are there rules prohibiting people from having two Medium Partner Program accounts? The reason I ask is I have a niche that’s doing really well and I’m considering separating out all my other content into another partner program account rather than several publications so there’s no overlap whatsoever.

I just want to make sure I’m not running afoul of any rules.

Thank you for your time!

James

Here was the response:

And voila, the account you’re reading now was born!

One account per niche

If you’ve been writing on here for a bit and find that one subject or type of content is vastly outperforming, consider creating a second account for a second niche.

Unlike with YouTube, it really doesn’t take long to meet the threshold for monetization.

Although publications give you an option for separating out your content, your readers will thank you for not spamming their email inbox with stuff they’re not interested in.

Thank you so much for reading this post all the way to the end! If you enjoyed it, please consider giving it some claps (you can give as many as 50!) so others can find it!
