Can Overweight People Be Healthy?
It is a known fact that excess weight has its own risk of cardiovascular disease.
It is a general belief that being overweight is NOT definitely healthy, but scientists are not that certain. All that is clear is that being overweight has its own health risks, mostly on vital organs in the body, but the relationship between weight and health is rather complex for straightforward answers. It depends on individuals, culture, build, muscles, bones, water, etc.
People who are obese, compared to those with a normal or healthy weight, are at increased risk for many serious diseases and health conditions, according to the Centre for Disease Control.
- All causes of death (mortality)
- High blood pressure (Hypertension)
- High LDL cholesterol, low HDL cholesterol, or high levels of triglycerides (Dyslipidemia)
- Type 2 diabetes
- Coronary heart disease
- Stroke
- Gallbladder disease
- Osteoarthritis (a breakdown of cartilage and bone within a joint)
- Sleep apnea and breathing problems
- Many types of cancer external icon
- Low quality of life
- Mental illnesses such as clinical depression, anxiety, and other mental disorders4,5
- Body pain and difficulty with physical functioning6
Don’t Be Caught Up With BMI Numbers
Although the chances of an obese are higher with chronic illnesses, especially with those that affect hearts, blood sugar, and certain cancers, nevertheless, it is what you eat that matters, and whether you are active and you exercise.
Body Mass Index, (BMI) is usually a calculation of weight over height. A BMI of 18.5–25 is considered normal, while any figure with a BMI of over 30 is considered overweight. The problem with BMI is that it doesn’t distinguish between muscle, fat, or bone mass. That is why BMI will term someone with heavy muscle mass or bone mass as obese, whereas he might not be.
Although it is not normally used, it is also possible to measure the fat content (body fat) in our bodies to determine obesity. About 26–31% of body fat is considered normal.
Maintaining A Healthy Weight Is A Long Term Process
Weight management is a long-term process, and do not believe in all those adverts that tell you you can dramatically reduce your weight over a short period of time. Weight management is a consistent and repetitive process of watching what you eat, and drink, and having a regular active lifestyle. And this should be the goal of everyone. That is why the removal of body fat by liposuction, for example, does not eliminate blood pressure, blood fats, and blood sugar, which are typically associated with obesity.
The secret to a healthy weight is ensuring you eat healthily, combined with physical exercise that balances out your calories. A healthy lifestyle must take into account adequate sleep.
Fitness Level And Obesity Is Associated With Early Death
A report published in the International Journal Of Epidemiology, states that it is important to be of healthy weight, as this prevents premature death, especially in older adults.
Professor Peter Nordstrom, who led the study, said: “These results suggest low Body Mass Index (BMI) early in life is more important than high physical fitness with regard to reducing the risk of early death.”
So can obese people be healthy? It depends on the body fat percentage, and where the body fat is stored. Fat stored around the stomach and visceral ones are considered to be the most dangerous.
The Takeaways
Most people believe that the health issue of fat people is associated with their body fat, but this is NOT true. The same health risk is associated with a bad diet and a non-active lifestyle.
All the problems associated with obesity can be improved upon and or prevented by a good lifestyle, diet, and exercise.
‘’Health encompasses much more than a number on a scale. It involves physical health as well as mental and emotional well-being. We tend to get hung up on weight, and that is a problem. The data on the benefits of regular physical activity and a healthy diet is consistent. We should focus on getting people to be more physically active and eating healthier foods. Our current approach tends to use diet and exercise as means to an end — weight loss. That is misguided. Healthy behaviors should be the goal. Some people may lose weight, some may not. But health improvements are largely independent of weight change.’’ Glenn A. Gaesser, a professor of exercise science in the College of Health Solutions at Arizona State University.
It is important not to stigmatize fat people, but all require a healthy lifestyle in the long run that can include weight loss for those with excess body fat.
