Can Companion Robots Solve the Loneliness Epidemic Among Elders?

New and innovative ways to handle the essence of companionship: listening, audience, interaction with technology

Research on health and aging is showing renewed interest in loneliness. It is often the downfall of elders who find that they lose friends and have difficulty replacing them.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has announced a new study to foster social connections. It is their concern that loneliness is a pressing health concern.

Ongoing for three years, it will analyze the vital role social connections play in improving health for elders and others.

Several years ago, I put together a seminar on friendship formation at a local senior center. The challenge, then and now, is that so many seniors suffer from physical isolation, which makes it difficult to get out and socialize.

Social Needs

The number of Americans with zero friends has increased by over 400% since 1990. This has led to increased loneliness and social isolation. Loneliness comes with serious health consequences, such as increased risk for mental illness, obesity, dementia, and early death.

These ill effects from loneliness suggest an urgent need for solutions. Providing a companion robot to support socially isolated older adults is an attractive alternative for some.

One of the viable ways is to use alternative companions using our scientific and technological capabilities.

Alternate Companions

A recent solution that reflects current innovations in AI, companion robots, has come to my attention. These groundbreaking companions, exemplified by technologies such as ElliQ, hold immense promise in mitigating the pervasive sense of isolation and loneliness among the elderly.

A quote on social media referring to robots grabbed my attention saying, “There was a time when humanity faced the universe alone and without a friend. Now he has creatures to help him, stronger creatures than himself, more faithful, more useful, and absolutely devoted to him. Mankind is no longer alone.”

Then I stumbled upon a new report regarding companion robots enhanced with artificial intelligence “may one day help alleviate the loneliness epidemic.” Researchers from Duke and Cornell University argue that having a real friend is the best solution to this epidemic.

As the report concluded, “But until society prioritizes social connectedness and eldercare, robots are a solution for the millions of isolated people who have no other solutions.”

I investigated what robots can do for the elderly.

What Robots Can Provide

Social robots like the ElliQ have had thousands of encounters with human users related to simple companionship, including company over a cup of tea or coffee. They provide a semblance of an audience, an entity that listens and responds.

Research on companion robots suggests they can reduce stress and loneliness and help older people remain healthy and active.

Newer robots with advanced AI programs may foster stronger social connections with humans than earlier generations of robots. “Generative AI like ChatGPT, based on large language models, allows robots to engage in more spontaneous conversations, and even mimic the voices of old friends and loved ones who have passed away.”

I appreciate that the substitution of machines for human companionship defies reason or is downright absurd; however, if combined with other outreach methods for friendship formation, it may be time to give it a shot.

In San Francisco, Judy Erickson, 93, remembers the day her ElliQ device arrived. “It was strange at first hearing a metallic voice ask how she was or if she wanted to know an interesting fact or the weather, but she got used to it. There are certain things she has come to depend on ElliQ for, and she knows a lot about her. In common with many users, Erickson refers to ElliQ as “she,” and it does sound somewhat female.”

The ElliQ robot is among a few technologies created to comfort, entertain, and inform seniors. The intent is both to provide an opportunity for a direct bond and spur more human-to-human interactions not involving robots.

These groundbreaking companions, exemplified by technologies such as ElliQ, hold immense promise in mitigating the pervasive sense of isolation and loneliness among the elderly.

Their integration of advanced AI, akin to generative models like ChatGPT, allows for dynamic interactions, facilitating conversations and providing emotional support that can significantly impact older adults' mental and physical well-being.

However, while these robots offer a valuable supplement to human interaction, they don’t replace the depth and richness of genuine human companionship.

Hence, embracing a multi-dimensional approach becomes imperative, where the synergy between robotic companionship and traditional outreach methods creates a robust network of support and connection for the elderly, offering diverse avenues to alleviate loneliness and enhance their quality of life.

Then, I explored the gaming and gamification concepts for the elderly within the AI assistance context.

Gaming and Gamification Assistance

Even though technology has become second nature for gaming, and gamification has become a norm for the younger generation, the elderly missed out on this opportunity.

We know that computer games have some benefits for older adults. I believe companion robots can potentially enhance gaming experiences for the elderly through various mechanisms tailored to their needs.

Firstly, robots can be interactive gaming companions, providing social engagement and mental stimulation. For instance, they can facilitate multiplayer games, acting as opponents or teammates, fostering social connections among the elderly who might face physical limitations or social isolation.

Moreover, these robots can personalize gaming experiences based on individual preferences and capabilities. Through advanced AI, they can adapt game difficulty levels, offer tutorials, and provide assistance in real-time, ensuring an inclusive and enjoyable gaming environment for older adults, regardless of their skill or mobility limitations.

The impact of employing robots in elderly gaming is multifold. Primarily, it contributes significantly to cognitive health by stimulating mental faculties through problem-solving, memory challenges, and strategic thinking inherent in gaming activities.

Additionally, it combats loneliness and depression by offering companionship and social interaction, promoting overall emotional well-being. By encouraging physical movement through motion-based games or exercises, these gaming robots can also support physical health, aiding in maintaining mobility and agility.

However, integrating robots into elderly gaming also poses implications. Ethical considerations regarding data privacy and security emerge, necessitating robust measures to safeguard sensitive information gathered during gaming interactions.

Additionally, ensuring the affordability and accessibility of such technology for older demographics remains a challenge, considering potential economic constraints and technological barriers that may limit widespread adoption.

Nonetheless, with thoughtful design and implementation, robots can revolutionize elderly gaming, fostering mental, social, and physical well-being among older adults, enriching their lives, and potentially transforming how we perceive aging and technology’s role in supporting the elderly population.
