Learning to Let Go and Accept with ChatGPT? Is it Possible?

How I Reduced My Anxiety and Stress and Told Resistance to Take a Hike!

A Cosmic Dance of Acceptance — A DALL-E Image

“Change the way you look at things and the things you look at change.” Wayne Dyer

Someone on Facebook was raving about a book about “letting go”. I checked the comments and not one word about the author, the book cover, nothing. I go to Amazon thinking I could find it and there are (2) pages full of books about “letting go”. Site your sources, people, please. 🙂

2024: The Year of Acceptance

One of my 2024 focus words is Acceptance and I intend to “accept all that is”, this year. When I say accept all that is, I mean I will accept all of the good, bad, and crazy of every experience, even if I don’t like it.

By accepting we aren’t just nodding “yes” to what life throws at us, we are saying yes, this is what is happening, now let me shift my focus on what I actually want to experience. I feel that by doing this I can kick resistance in the butt and maybe reduce some of the anxiety in my gut.

Letting Go Meets Acceptance

I say all of this because the idea of “letting go” really got me thinking. It feels like letting go and acceptance are two sides of the same coin. To really embrace acceptance, I realized I needed to get a grip on letting go too.

Isn’t this something we all wrestle with? If we all practiced this we wouldn’t constantly hear about taking deep breaths, chanting affirmations, or walking in nature. There are a gazillion ten-hour zen-type meditation videos on YouTube. But none of these things worked when I would catch myself holding onto the ropes of life so tight, that my hands locked in place.

How ChatGPT Helped

I never found the book from the post, but who needs a book when you have ChatGPT so I prompted: ChatGPT, how can I learn to let go and accept the journey of my life?

It feels so good to just relax and let go right? I’ve been plagued with anxiety all of my life. Last year it dawned on me, “Could the knot in my stomach have something to do with resistance?” It seemed I was constantly going against and disagreeing with my current reality. This also became a key part of my ChatGPT discussion.

I resisted my 9 to 5 even though I accepted the job, resisted my grown kids decisions even though they pay their own bills, and resisted the way my life was going, even though I knew my life was the sum total of the choices I’ve made.

I would notice just how tense my body and mind felt. So back in November, last year, I took a deep breath and decided to let all of the crap I had no control over…GO!!

I had a 10-point bulleted list from ChatGPT before I could blink, but they were the normal general answers that I would probably find in the book, had I ever found it. “Let Go of Control” was on the list. I so wanted to respond with a sarcastic, “Dude if I could do that I wouldn’t be here”, but I “let it go.” 🙂

But I did ask, “Can you give me some creative and unorthodox answers to my questions ChatGPT, these are pretty general?”

Saying Yes to Life’s Surprises

This resulted in some pretty creative things, that of course I first resisted, but I printed them off and decided to try this one: “A Yes Day” Challenge: Have a ‘Yes Day’ where you say yes to new experiences, within reason and safety. This can open you up to new possibilities and teach the value of spontaneity and trust.

This resonated with my “Acceptance” focus and would definitely mean I had to “Let Go”. I loved the movie, Yes Man, with Jim Carrey. He was hilarious and watching his life unfold in the craziest ways as he said ‘yes’ to some really dumb things had me curious enough to try this.

Nothing as eventful or dramatic as Jim Carrey’s experiences happened in my one-day challenge. I decided to do the challenge on a work day which probably wasn’t the most optimum. It meant I would be saying YES to a bunch of work stuff. Then the ever-dreaded “Do you want to come with us to happy hour” from my co-worker, entered my ears and I thought oh hell no.

I was committed to the day’s mission so I reluctantly said yes, ok. I don’t really drink so it wasn”t fun watching them get lost in the sauce, but I did meet an interesting guy who was also interested in AI and I wound up having a pretty cool night.

Breathing Life In and Out

Afterward, I decided to incorporate my “Yes” practice into my daily life in an 80/20 rule type of way. To this day, I say “yes” more often than not, only saying no when I absolutely can’t make it happen.

After the first 30 days, of doing this, the knot in my gut had loosened and wasn’t as tight. Another good side effect was becoming acutely aware of when I’m not letting go and in full-on resistance mode so I can shift my thinking almost immediately.

The journey of letting go and accepting, isn’t about abandoning our choices, ways of seeing things, or our decisions. It’s about an acknowledgment that yep, this is what’s in front of me. Now how can I be flexible and bendy, letting new energy and life in and out like a deep mindful breath, and find the best possible outcome? The ultimate goal? To find the sweet spot that works great for me and for everyone else.

ChatGPT and You

I used to have to work all of the “what’s life all about” thoughts and feelings on my own, but having ChatGPT to flush things out is so amazing to me. Are you ready to trust ChatGPT to give you your own unique life journey tips? Here are some ChatGPT Prompts and Action Steps for you to try:

  1. ChatGPT, please help me explore areas of resistance in my life. I’m looking for insights on how to identify where I might be resisting change or holding onto things unnecessarily, and how to gently ease into a mindset of acceptance and letting go.”
  2. ChatGPT, (explain what the situation) is going on in my life. Please give me some action steps I can take to find a solution. (I use this prompt often to help reframe thoughts and viewpoints that are doing nothing to help me find viable solutions).
  3. ChatGPT, please suggest some unique activities or practices that aren’t the usual meditation or journaling.
  4. ChatGPT, please create a guided reflection on the theme of Acceptance. (I’ve actually created a few of these and used Elevenlabs.io to record with an AI voice to listen to throughout the day).

Some Creative Action Steps to Consider:

  • Create a ‘Letting Go’ Jar: Write down things you want to let go of on small pieces of paper (e.g., grudges, worries) and place them in a jar. Periodically review and remove them when you feel you’ve moved past these issues.
  • Designate a ‘No Control’ Day: Choose a day where you deliberately make no plans and decisions. Let others decide for you, or go with the flow, to experience and accept the outcome of not being in control.
  • Start a ‘Yes, And’ Conversation Game: Engage in conversations where you build on what the other person says without negating (using ‘yes, and’ instead of ‘but’). This can help practice acceptance in communication.
  • Have a Marie Kondo Party: Host a swap event (books, clothes, recipes) with friends or community members only taking items that “Spark Joy”. This encourages letting go of items while accepting, appreciating, and loving new ones.
