Can Anybody Become a Good Driver?
Or some people are just made for this?

I remember having the fear to drive a vehicle, a fear that I would have never thought I will surpass. I was actually terrified of driving. Here I am today, driving more aggressively than many drivers out there, without any problem. But, after taking my driver’s license, I didn’t drive for 10 years. And then, I was forced by the circumstances to drive and I did it.
If you have a fear of something you must do and you feel you will never be able to do that thing, trust me, you can do it. You are staying in your comfort zone, I know. It is good to be safe, don’t get me wrong, but there are some things in life that must be done, even if there is a degree of danger involved. Driving can be one of them.
Before I had a driving license, I asked different drivers:
“How does it feel to drive a car? Does it take long to get used to it?”
I asked these questions not only because I feared the possibility to become a driver, but because I was also afraid to even be a passenger when a friend of mine was always driving aggressively, overtaking most cars that were in front of him.
The majority of the answers were:
“Oh, it’s just like riding a bicycle! You simply get used to it, don’t worry!”
I knew how to ride a bicycle. It just came naturally when I was a kid. This was really encouraging!
My driving instructor used to say at the beginning of my lessons:
“Driving is hard in the beginning and it can be stressful until you get used to the traffic. For most people, it eventually becomes a pleasure.”
He also said at the end:
“Driving school is only 25% of driving. The rest of 75% you learn on your own, from your own driving experience.”
I must say that his statement was accurate, and my recommendation for anyone who is a beginner would be to attempt to drive alone in a more isolated area on a road with minimum traffic first, in order to get used to the car.
My father, who was a professional truck driver (so it means I have driving in my blood, right?), had a saying:
“You can only become a true driver when you start to connect with the car and feel its body like your own.”
Being a driver with years of experience, I completely understand now what he meant. I feel sometimes that I am one with the car and… yes, it becomes just like riding a bicycle. Maybe some drivers are better than others, but anyone can become a good driver, in time.
Right now I think I am a good driver and becoming even better every day. In the end, I will only tell you one thing, which is the conclusion of what I have written here:
If I did it, anyone can do it!
