My Fiction & Non-Fiction Writing Goals for April 2023
As I participate in Camp NaNoWriMo, I’ll be focusing on different types of creative writing — there and here

For those of you who don’t already know about it, NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) is an event that happens each November in which participants set goals of writing at least 50,000 words of a novel.
There is also a spinoff of it that happens each April and July called Camp NaNoWriMo. This is much different than the November event.

There is no dictated numerical word count goal that participants are supposed to strive for during CampNaNoWriMo. It’s up to each participant to set their own writing goals for the month.
I’ve participated in the normal NaNoWriMo multiple times, but I’m now heading to their Camp for my first time.
I’m very excited about it!
Since joining Medium a couple of years ago, I’ve gotten very far removed from writing fiction. Most of the 300+ pieces I’ve written here have been non-fiction and have focused on pop culture. While I’ve had a fantastic time with all of it, I’ve missed writing fiction.
It was the first ‘creative love’ of my life — but I’ve done almost none of it in a very long time. For CampNaNoWriMo, my goal is to get myself back into a routine of writing fiction.
My self-imposed word count goal for the month is 10,000 words. However, I’m not going to be working on a novel. Instead, I’m going to focus on random scenes, short stories, and whatever else my imagination prompts me to do. If any of those writing sessions end up producing an idea that I want to turn into a novel, that will be great.
But if they don’t, that will be great too.
I’ve gotten so far away from fiction writing that it feels sort of foreign to me now. All I want to do this month is tap into my creativity and work on writing fiction again. If I can do that on the majority of the days this month, then I’ll be very happy!
As for what I’ll be writing on Medium throughout this month, I’m going to be doing things a little differently than I normally do.
The majority of my posts here usually center around music. However, I want to branch out and try other things — like maybe some personal essays. I may also want to try to write some comedic non-fiction pieces — and a few other types of things.
For April, I’ll be focusing on being creative with fiction for CampNaNoWriMo and I’ll be focusing on creative non-fiction in my pieces for Medium.
I’m going to limit myself to writing only one piece each week about music. My main goal is to write and publish two non-fiction pieces each week about other things.
I’m excited by the idea of trying a lot of different types of writing this month!
How about you, fellow writers? Are any of you participating in CampNaNoWriMo this month? If so, what are your goals for it?
Also, if you’re a writer and you have other goals for the month that have nothing to do with NaNoWriMo, what are they?
Regardless, I wish you nothing but the best with your writing goals. I hope you enjoy yourself while working on them.
Happy writing!
