Summary

A writer expresses frustration over a significant drop in followers and engagement on Medium, which has affected their income, and feels ignored by Medium's lack of response to their inquiries.

Abstract

The article conveys the writer's dismay upon receiving a notification of 35 new followers, contrasting sharply with the reality of having published nearly 7,000 articles over three years and previously having a follower count of 7.4k. The writer is alarmed by the disappearance of approximately 95% of their followers, which they attribute to Medium's platform changes. The drop in followers has also led to a decrease in readership and earnings, which the writer suggests is due to Medium's unexplained and possibly intentional algorithmic changes. Despite repeated attempts to seek clarification from Medium, the writer has been met with silence, leading to feelings of being disregarded and financially impacted.

Opinions

  • The writer is critical of Medium's lack of transparency and communication regarding the changes that have led to a drastic reduction in their followers and readership.
  • There is a sense of betrayal and frustration over Medium's perceived prioritization of annual fees over the well-being and financial stability of its content creators.
  • The writer implies that Medium's actions, whether due to careless "tinkering" or deliberate manipulation, have had a detrimental effect on the visibility and compensation of its writers.
  • The writer feels that Medium's silence on the matter is disrespectful and dismissive of the creators who have contributed significantly to the platform.
  • There is a call for other writers to share their experiences, suggesting a belief that this issue is widespread and not isolated to the writer's experience alone.

Call Me Crazy. But This Might Be Why Your Stats Imploded.

No earnings? No eyeballs? See this.

This is the email I just got this morning:

You have 35 new followers on Medium, for a total of 7437.

Here is what my profile says about the number of followers I broke my back and busted my ASS for three years and nearly SEVEN THOUSAND ARTICLES:

7.4k

Seven thousand four hundred and counting is what my PROFILE says and what was paying some of my bills before Medium decided to conduct multiple disastrous surgeries on the platform this year.

So would you like to explain to stupid, silly, crazy old me what happened to ninety-five percent of the people who chose to follow me, people who joined Medium to read my shit (and YOURS)?

Medium isn’t talking. They aren’t explaining.

The cynic in me says that the mindless tinkering- or wilful, who knows- says that Medium gets to keep their annual fees, while the stats, which for so many of us, have plummeted, which means they can no longer see or read us. Which means we don’t get paid.

But Medium does.

I have lost count of how many times I’ve asked for an explanation.

Crickets.

Crickets.

Crickets.

This remarkable stat: fully ninety percent of those who read and followed my work have simply been disappeared, like dissidents in a Chilean coup.

I’d be curious, guys. Did anyone else get this, and did the light finally dawn?
