Hi Friends!

For those who don’t know me, I am KiKi Walter. I am the owner of The Memoirist, Age of Empathy, QuickTalk, The Mayhem, and The Writing Pub. I also have a newsletter called The Art of Memoir on Substack.

Together with my team, our most recent venture is Black Bear—a publication dedicated to providing articles and stories from mental health, addiction, and recovery/sobriety writers. You don’t need to be an expert…you just need to have a story.

In just a couple of days, we already have some amazing pieces up on the pub from writers like Michele Maize, Shirley Laffa, Michele Cambardella, and Christopher Robin (oh, and my loud mouth as well).

Have you experienced depression? Heavy drinking? A pill addiction? PTSD? A relationship with a narcissist? Bipolar disorder? Sleeping pill dependency? Seasonal depression? A relationship with someone who has had an issue? Or you are an expert in writing about these things? We’d love to have you join us as a writer!

What I’m Looking For

I’m basically seeking two different categories: informational and personal. The topics are broad across the mental health and addiction spectrum. I want to build up an area that has informational pieces…signs and symptoms, what is?, living with such and such…, etc. For the personal, it’s just what it sounds like. Whether a memoir or personal essay or journaling what you’re going through presently.

Informational pieces must be accurate and link to any sources you use. While I won’t over-edit personal pieces, I will be a discerning editor when it comes to informational articles.

How to Submit

First: Please follow our pub!

All requests should be made via the “Join Us” tab on our homepage OR by filling out the form at the bottom of this post. It can take up to a few days to be added to the publication, so please be patient with us. Also, we will not be able to advise you that you’ve been added, so please keep that in mind.

This does not guarantee that you will be published. As this is a different kind of publication, upon receipt, your piece will undergo an initial review. You will receive a private note indicating if it will move on to the editing process.

Pieces will be promoted on Twitter and Instagram by our team. In some instances, I may cross-promote on my other platforms.

Timing

As I have many publications under my belt, my timing may be a bit tricky now and then. If you find yourself waiting too long, please either DM me personally on Twitter (@kikiwalter) or leave me a private note on this post.
