California’s New Rules. (Lockdown at) Home For The Holidays
Christmas will look a lot different this year. Back in March, we hoped the COVID-19 pandemic would be under control by the summer.
Yet, 10 months after it started, here we are. Cases are surging across the country. The positivity rate has increased, active cases are higher than ever before, and many states, including California, are instituting massive lockdowns.
There will be stricter rules for residents. The holidays will look different as restrictions will go into 2021.
What is Happening in California?
New stay-at-home orders are going into effect Sunday night. California governor, Gavin Newsom, is following through on measures to relieve California ICUs at critical levels. Southern California and Central Valley hospitals are straining with new COVID-19 cases.
Public health officials are using ICU capacity as the signal to initiate lockdowns. This has been deemed necessary by the high positive test rate, and surge in cases in major counties.
The new restrictions include about 85% of all California residents. There is a serious concern about an overwhelming amount of hospitalizations in the coming weeks. Other hospitals are nearing ICU capacity.
Increased hospitalizations paired with record case numbers are setting the stage for a challenging holiday season.
What Are The New Restrictions in California?
On Sunday night, at 11:59 pm Southern California and the San Joaquin Valley implemented these new restrictions.
- No in-person dining at restaurants. Take out and delivery still allowed.
- People from different households are not allowed to gather. Exceptions for outdoor church services.
- Nail salons, hair salons, playgrounds, zoos, museums, aquariums, wineries, card rooms are all required to close.
- Retail stores open at a 20% capacity.
- Leisure hotel stays and nonessential travel banned.
- Short-term campground usage is banned.
These new rules will be instituted for a period of three weeks.
The Holiday’s From Home
These new lockdowns cover the entire period of Hanukkah, Christmas, and New Year’s Eve. Public health officials were especially concerned about the impact of these holidays when people typically gather in large groups.
There is a real sense of fatigue setting in across the nation. There has been some form of restriction felt by most people since March. As winter continues bearing down on us, so do new COVID-19 restrictions.
This will be a challenging stretch of time. The goal is to get hospital capacity under control and be in a position to treat the most severe cases. Frontline healthcare workers, who have already faced a tough year, continue their stressful work.
The holiday season will require more virtual family visits and no festive parties. It is a shift for everyone to adjust to this. With promising vaccine results, we are hopeful that the holiday season in 2021 will feel more normal.
California COVID-19 Cases
There have been 1.3 million cases of COVID-19 since the pandemic began in California. Friday, December 4, recorded 25,068 new cases. This is a new record for California’s daily case count.
This seems to be a staggering number. Across the country, other states are routinely setting record-high numbers.
This season will be challenging, but the numbers show why new restrictions are necessary. Taking care of each other is vital, so is taking care of yourself.
How to Handle Winter?
As Winter fast approaches, it is the time to start making plans to stay healthy. Especially mentally healthy. The isolation and restrictions can create worse mental problems than physical ones.
Focusing on physical health can increase mental health too. For me, focusing on physical before mental is the most effective. It is the same as going to the gym before eating healthy. Finding a keystone habit is important to stay in a healthy routine.
The holidays will be challenging, are they are not what anyone wants. But, this is the situation at hand and are only option is to now handle it in the healthiest manner possible.
There will be life post-coronavirus. There is light at the end of this dark tunnel. Now, it is our responsibility to stay healthy and get there.
