California Resolution ACR 176 Celebrates the History and Culture of the Low Rider
This measure would celebrate the history and culture of cruising. Local officials and law enforcement are encouraged to participate in safe cruising events with local car clubs.
The resolution highlights the automotive community’s positive spirit and cultural contributions. Legendary cruising strips and car club activities are held statewide.
Previously, local authorities were authorized to pass ordinances that regulated or prohibited cruising.
Highlights of ACR 176
- Cruising is the custom of leisurely driving on urban boulevards in dropped and dolled-up vehicles, which includes meetups, lowrider, vintage, and custom vehicle owners
- Cruising promotes local car culture and the art of styling and maintaining a vintage vehicle
- Cruising often occurs as gatherings where cars are parked, and owners show off their cars and admire other cars, or as one-off cruises where people gather and drive their cars through the streets
- Whittier Boulevard, Van Nuys Boulevard, Laurel Canyon Boulevard, Hollywood Boulevard, Crenshaw Boulevard, Colorado Boulevard, and McHenry Avenue are among the most famous cruising strips in California
- Famous cruising strips in northern California thrive in the Sacramento, San Francisco, San Jose, Oakland, Mission Street in San Francisco, Broadway Boulevard in Sacramento, Lake Merritt in Oakland, and Story and Kings Road in San Jose
The new law will go into effect January 1, 2024.
