Michael Powell on ‘Calder Folk’

I create illustrations, poems, and stories which often feature alternative worlds made up of mythic and hybrid creatures, inspired by a love of story, folklore, mythology, and the natural world.

I also like to make use of found and discarded objects to create illustrative installations within both derelict and forgotten spaces as well as on gallery walls.

These works were created as part of an ongoing project of mine called Calder Folk which is an illustration installation project inspired by the folklore and place legends of the Upper Calder Valley in West Yorkshire.

The illustrations were originally exhibited in unexpected outdoor spaces across the Upper Calder Valley in 2021. For each illustration, I created a foldable booklet, with a specially created map, poem and illustration inspired by place legends from within the Upper Calder Valley for people to use to roam the hills and explore the valleys of Calderdale.

Alongside this, musical friends created special compositions for each place legend, which could be heard in situ via a QR code.
