The appreciation of caffeine

Caffeine is a drug, my drug, of course. I wake up in the morning and start the coffee pot, my eyes are half-open, and it feels like the room is spinning. After a cup or two of coffee, it’s time to get busy, clean the messy house from the night before, get the kids up and ready for school, feed the newborn baby, maybe do a little blogging before starting my homework that needs to be done weekly.

I envy people who don’t need or even care for caffeine; I wish I could just wake up, say good morning, and start my day. However, there are some days when I am only running on a few hours of sleep. Caffeine is also addicting, in my opinion, but the good kind of addicted.

In the mornings, I love the smell of fresh coffee beans being ground up and then being freshly brewed; there is just something about the smell of fresh coffee, a lightly chilled home, and the scent of the newspaper that just screams “GOOD MORNING” (yes, we still read the actual newspaper in my home, I know it’s rare nowadays)

Even though I think coffee is the best thing in the world in the mornings, I always drink a few bottles of water behind it to stay hydrated. By afternoon I’m running on low energy again; after all, I spent most of my morning chasing a toddler and preschooler around the house with a newborn on my hip instead of making lunch and still trying to finish my homework. You can’t blame me that I’m tired, so I reach for a Mio with energy to drop into a few water bottles for the remainder of the day, followed by just plain water again as I know caffeine can dehydrate you.

Finally, it is nighttime, the house is silent, and all four kids are sound asleep; I can barely keep my eyes open by this time.

But I survived another day with the help of caffeine.

Thank you, caffeine. I seriously don’t know what I would do without you.
