You Wouldn’t Believe How Much Money I Made from Writing Just One Medium Story.

This is seriously mind-blowing.

I had decided to joined the Medium Partner Program when I wrote my first article in July 2021. I believed that I had interesting stories to tell, a point of view to share. I had zero expectations. It was an experiment and I didn’t expect to actually make any money.

July. August. September. Summer turned to autumn and sure enough, I made nothing. Nada.

This month, I logged into the account.

I could scarcely believe my eyes.

I had made a mind-blowing amount of money.

“$0.04.”

That’s how much money I made in October for one article on Medium written 3 months ago — “I was a social science grad student who sold my soul to capitalism.

You might laugh at the amount of money. After all, you can’t do anything with that.

But for me, the difference between making nothing and making something is profoundly qualitative.

For the longest time, I had this grandiose dream of making passive income. I was a thinker, a dreamer, a philosopher. I researched and conceptualized and eliminated models for making passive income.

I dreamt it all in my mind.

But you know what they say in business, in the “real-world,” in this world driven by entrepreneurs and doers. Business rewards the doers, the executers — not the thinkers, the philosophers, the poets, and the dreamers.

For a long time I believed it. I internalized these beliefs.

No one wants to read about philosophical musings on society.

People pay you for solutions not stories.

Work isn’t fun that’s why you get paid.

This is why for me, making $0.04 is so important. I made $0.04 simply by sharing my story. I made $0.04 by simply being me.

Which means I’m now officially a part of the creator economy. I’ve never thought of myself as a creator.

I’m not an Instagrammer.

Nor a Youtuber.

I can’t design.

I can’t code.

I can only write.

But our voice is the most important thing that we have. And if I can share my story, I think you can too.

We are all creators now in the new Creator Economy. Isn’t that mind-blowing?
