By the Time the Irises Bloom; an Ekphrastic Poem

#NatPoWriMo day 15

Painting of Vincent Van Gogh — Irises, Iris flower

By the Time the Irises Bloom

I hope you’ll meet me here in the spring of next year.

When the soils are still cool yet the air lifts a warm smile.

We’ll sit here and rest a long, deep-breath while.

You’ll speak of the furrow that deepens your brow,

and I, a hand passing over curls, time-turned silver.

I know the irises will bloom, just as I have promised you.

The purple lips, yellow-hazed, fresh bellies of scent, enraptured,

will speak of passed time, tender with our earthen wounds,

careful as the damp, cool womb. We’ll linger as time turns noon.

Thank you for reading this Ekphrastic poem based on the above painting by Vincent Van Gogh.
