Business Casual on a Budget
How to prepare for working around people again

Something completely unexpected happened to me back in December. Some of you might be beginning to experience similar events. I was sent out on a work trip for the first time since the pandemic began. For the first time in two years, I was going to work with my colleagues in person instead of over computer screens.
I was hit with a wave of excitement, followed by a wave of panic. Do you know how many work-ready clothing items I had left in my closet? About zero.
With my work trip swiftly approaching, I had to rebuild my wardrobe. During this little adventure, I discovered some gems in the world of clothes shopping.
Here are three shopping methods to help you rebuild your business casual wardrobe on a budget:
- Online Stores
I am usually not one to buy clothes online, but my friend recently bought clothes for her job on Shein. I was impressed at the quality of most of the garments as she pulled them out of the bags. This made me do some research of my own! Here are my favorite pieces that I found:
On my search, I also discovered the UK-based site, BooHoo. Here are some pieces that caught my eye!
2. Physical Stores
I know this “method” seems like a no-brainer, but let me tell you about the stores that I frequent for work.
The first store is TJ Maxx. I can always find blouses and cardigans here. Recently, I stocked up on turtle necks, which has really elevated my winter work collection.
The next store is Walmart. Not only can you find your basics here (camisoles, leggings, etc.), you can also score some comfy professional pants. I’m pretty sure that they are technically supposed to be leggings, but they look professional, which is good enough for me!
3. Thrift/ Consignment Stores
When I am shopping for clothes (whether for work or regular life), second-hand is my favorite way to go. I can often be spotted hitting up the local goodwill for blazers. In most cities, there are locally owned thrift shops as well.
Another great way to level up your wardrobe without hurting your wallet is to sell some of your old clothes at a store like Plato’s Closet or Buffalo Exchange. (You can also do this online on apps like Poshmark and Depop). Use the cash you make to purchase your new work clothes!
I hope this helps you prepare for your journey back into real life. If there are any other places you shop for business casual attire, please share!
