Business Cards

I Treat Them Like My Shoes

My latest business card — designed with Microsoft Publisher

I spent my morning with creative endeavors and made myself some new business cards. I did discover my printer needs to be re-aligned. Publisher prints ten business cards to a page. This is the first time I put something on the reverse, just my website TalkingToSpirit.com and some lines, figuring I could print a phone number there if needed.

Over the years, I’ve made myself all sorts of different cards. I like the variety and will, as things change, update them. This is the first time I ever advertised my location on Medium. The problem with the illustration above is it is just not as sharp as I would like it to be. But, you know what? I’ll figure it out one of these days.

The thing with making your own business cards is you can have them emphasize your different pursuits. Like:

1. I am a writer and write books. 2. I am a psychic channel and can channel for you. Who? Anybody. Your unborn children if you want. Your pets who have died. Certainly, any loved ones who have passed you’d like to talk to. Sometimes, I can locate lost articles. Usually, my husband’s keys. 3. I can teach you some things about being a psychic. I can teach you how to meditate, which is sort of necessary for being a psychic. I can reassure you that God is everywhere, and your prayers are heard. It doesn’t make it any easier when they are not granted, but they are heard by somebody. 4. You could have one with just your name on it. Like a calling card, Victorian ladies used to leave when they went visiting, and you weren’t home. Your maid, or whoever presumably answered the door, would leave it in the silver salver on the front table by the door. There would be a lacy doily underneath. That doesn’t happen anymore. At least, I don’t think it happens. But, it’s a possibility: just your name.

I can design cards with Canva.com, but when it comes time to print, it will cost you $15. I don’t know how many I get, but I want them for free. My labor. My printer. My supplies. My creativity.

I will keep a variety of them in my wallet, no more than 10 of any specific design, because that’s what prints on one piece of cardstock. If the situation calls for flowers, I’ve got that covered. If it feels sort of yellowish, then I can do that too. This is the first time I’ve ever used birds. I’m not a really birdy person other than my parakeet. He has no name. We just call him Birdy or sometimes Bud, which, I guess, are names. It would be like naming the cat Kitty, which has also happened occasionally if we aren’t fast enough. It’s like if you can’t decide on a name right off the bat, then the placeholder becomes the animal’s name.

I never had children, so I’ve no experience in naming a human being. The story goes one of my brothers didn’t have a name for the first three days he was alive. I’ve always thought the name he ended up with was absolutely perfect. Michael Patrick. Just perfect.

You know, the next business card I make, I should put “I talk to dead people” on the back. People never know what a channel is. I could add, “Call for an appointment,” and then write in my phone number.

The thing is, is that in my retirement, I don’t answer the phone much. There are a handful of people who I will rouse myself and shuffle across the room if the house phone rings. I don’t use my cell phone because I still haven’t learned how to hang up properly after a call. The last time I talked to somebody on a cell phone, I thought the call was over until I heard their voice emanating into the room, “You need to press the red button.” It was sort of silly. Also, most calls I get are from people who think I want to spend money. I don’t have any money. Why would I spend it?

Before I retired, I had to answer all calls that came through. Usually, it was somebody who wanted something that only I could do. When you begin your day with a laundry list of things that need to get done, the fifteen calls you get during the course of the day with more things to do just gets to be overwhelming and then irritating. The problem is that I find it difficult to say no. Now, I don’t answer the phone, except as I said, if I know the person and want to talk to them.

Anyway, back to the business cards. It’s nice to have a choice, just like you have different shoes to wear. You could have one for holidays, seasonal cards, or with different colors that could match your outfit. Just because you enjoy them. Who needs 500 cards when you can print them yourself, ten at a time?
