Building Teams That Are Innovative

In the past, leaders were perceived to be strong-willed with dominant characteristics. You would rarely see any leaders bragging about their humbleness or meek spirit.

However, sacrificial leadership is a model being advocated by leader researchers like Adam Grant and Simon Sinek. As a result, we are seeing leaders that are more caring in nature and take a more humble approach.

With greater humility being seen in our leaders, we are also seeing an increase in our team’s abilities to innovate. As competition continues to grow, innovation is becoming a key driver for the majority of sectors. So, this link between humility and innovation is one that has become interesting in recent times.

In this Tavian’s shorts, I will identify the characteristics of humble leadership and why it improves innovation.

The Characteristics of a Humble Leader

The characteristics of humble leadership are:

  1. To View Oneself Accurately: This is the ability to have a positive view of yourself and your team as a leader.
  2. Displaying Appreciation for Others: This is the ability to actively show how much you value the work of your team.
  3. Being Teachable: This is the ability to learn from those who are in a position lower than yours.

The Impact of Humble Leadership on Innovation

Research has found that humble leadership that encompasses all of these traits improves something called, “Team Voice Climate”. Team Voice Climate is the measure of the belief held by your team that speaking up is effective and safe.

Not only is Team Voice Climate essential for making your team feel supported, but it contributes to innovation. Speaking up allows for an open environment where individuals can collaborate in a safe way.
