WRITING
Build Your World, One Word at a Time
Sky Collection quote prompt № 18
If I waited for perfection, I would never write a word. — Margaret Atwood
The writers in my classroom sit and stare at their notebooks. I prompt them, yet some kids are so anxious about their ideas that they refuse to let one word on the page.
This week, I am so excited to dig into Margaret Atwood’s new book, The Testaments. She is certainly a brilliant world builder, and lately I have been feeling like her dystopian fantasies could easily happen. So naturally, I need more of her stories to fuel my paranoia. I digress.
Also, I just admire her as a writer. We so often read something that seems so good that we forget the labor of the work.
I try to help my students find magic in revision, but it isn’t easy. Sometimes once they get something down, they refuse to see anything else that could blossom out of what they’ve written.
I wonder what blossoms from your soul once you get it down for others to read. Everyday is a chance to start over, start fresh, begin again.
Point: let’s all take Margaret Atwood’s advice. Do not wait for perfection. Get your ideas out there. I cannot wait to read the worlds you build!
If you would like, respond to the quote above with a poem, short story, essay, or whatever creative expression you wish. I cannot wait to see what you come up with this time!
