from CloudFormation. I hit the delete button a couple of times. I got a message saying the delete process was initiated but the stack never turns to Delete in progress. The screen just flashes and that’s it.Then I remembered that I created a role that referenced that IdP. Bug in CloudFormation trying to delete identity provider stack

I wanted to delete an redeploy my identity provider stack in my AWS Account from CloudFormation. I hit the delete button a couple of times. I got a message saying the delete process was initiated but the stack never turns to Delete in progress. The screen just flashes and that’s it.

Then I remembered that I created a role that referenced that IdP. In addition I had a policy associated with that role.

I deleted the policy.

Then after that was done I delete the Role.

Then I was able to successfully delete the AWS IAM Identity Provider.

It seems like the AWS console should provide some kind of error message that there are roles with trust policies dependent on the Identity Provider so it cannot be deleted.
