Buffalo Bill Cultural Center
In Oakley, Kansas

While we were in Kansas we stopped at the Buffalo Bill Cultural Center in Oakley, Kansas. The visitor center is simply a small gift shop with maps and tourist information. It was closed by the time we got there. The main attraction is the sculpture anyway. I’m a sucker for sculptures.

The bronze sculpture of the Buffalo Bill project took three years to complete and cost over $450,000 to build. Buffalo Bill on his horse weighs approximately 5,000 pounds, while the Buffalo weighs about 4,000 pounds.

Rich thinks he is protecting the buffalo, but doesn’t that give you a great perspective of how big these are?
A little history — in 1868, William F. Cody, better known as “Buffalo Bill,” made his living as a contract buffalo hunter feeding the crews laying track across Kansas for the Kansas Pacific Railroad. He helped shape the world’s image of the American West.
If you are ever near Oakley, Kansas be sure to stop and see this amazing sculpture.
