Staring at the basement door, one pale, sweaty hand frozen on the porcelain knob, he imagined one of his father’s nightmares on the other side.

He snapped straight as footsteps pounded toward him from behind.

“Sam? C’mon! Get dad’s stick!” his brother, Jack, shouted as he ran around the corner, thrusting out his own hockey stick. “They’re waiting!”

“I’m . . . b’right there,” Sam croaked.

Jack’s mischievous smile reappeared, “What’s wrong? You pussy?”

“No . . . I–I’m not.”

“Whatever,” Jack snapped and wrenched open the door.

With a violent shove, Jack threw Sam into the black void.
