Britain’s Next Prime Minister: The ITV Debate
Will the real British Prime Minister please stand up?
Julie Etchingham, at 19:00 (7:00 pm GMT) on Sunday, 17th July 2022, hosts an hour-long debate in London with the five Conservative Party leadership contenders, vying to become Britain’s Prime Minister.
All five candidates have agreed to take part and over the course of the 60-minute programme, they will debate with each other in response to questions put by the host.
Taking place on the eve of the next round of voting, Rishi Sunak, Penny Mordaunt, Liz Truss, Tom Tugendhat, and Kemi Badenoch will debate the issues dominating the campaign. Each candidate will have the opportunity to make a closing statement. It feels very American.
Americans, watching presidential and vice-presidential debates playout live, have grown used to seeing politicians seeking public approval. Everyone can remember now former President Donald J. Trump stalking his opponent, Hillary Clinton, around the stage during one of their debates. It was all very odd. Nothing like that will happen in the coming ITV debate.
Rishi Sunak…
Rishi Sunak is a British politician who served as chancellor of the exchequer from 2020 to 2022, having previously served as chief secretary to the Treasury from 2019 to 2020. A member of the Conservative Party, he has been member of Parliament for Richmond since 2015.
Penny Mordaunt…
Penelope Mary Mordaunt FRSA is a British politician who has been serving as Minister of State for Trade Policy since 2021. A member of the Conservative Party, she has been the Member of Parliament representing Portsmouth North since 2010.
Liz Truss…
Mary Elizabeth Truss is a British politician who has been the Member of Parliament for South West Norfolk since 2010. She has served as Foreign Secretary since 2021 and Minister for Women and Equalities since 2019.
Tom Tugendhat…
Thomas Georg John Tugendhat MBE VR is a British politician. A member of the Conservative Party, he has served as Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee since 2017. Tugendhat has been the Member of Parliament for Tonbridge and Malling since 2015.
Kemi Badenoch…
Olukemi Olufunto Badenoch is a British politician who has served as Member of Parliament for Saffron Walden since 2017. A member of the Conservative Party, she served as Minister of State for Local Government, Faith and Communities and Minister of State for Equalities from 2021 to 2022.
ITV, the UK’s biggest commercial broadcaster, will give the audience the opportunity to get to know more about the candidates and help them decide who has the qualities to become “primus inter pares” (Latin: first amongst equals).
