Bring Back Illumination
This morning, I woke up to the news that the Illumination publication has been shut down. I was saddened to see this.
I do not understand why this has happened. And I guess it’s not my business.
But I do understand this: Illumination needs to be brought back. It has given a voice to so many writers. So many intelligent people managed to increase their readership because of Illumination.
If there was a problem with the way it was being managed, then the solution is to address that problem, not to shut down the whole thing. (And I don’t know if there was any problem or not. Again, it’s not my business.)
Let’s say there was a problem with the way the U. S. government was being managed. (There are many.) So what should we do about that? Should we address the problem, or should we shut down the entire U. S. government? Obviously, the former. Government shutdowns don’t help anyone.
Illumination has helped me personally. I created my Medium account in September 2019. For the first four months, I didn’t get much traction. In January, I believe I had around 40 followers. But then, in January, Dr. Mehmet Yildiz (founder of Illumination) reached out to me. He told me he was impressed with my writing. About two months later, he started the Illumination publication, and he invited me to join it. I have been publishing under it ever since. I currently have 158 followers.
So I gained about 40 followers in my first four months, and now, only three months later, I have 158. No way is that a coincidence. Illumination has doubled the expected value of the number of followers I would get by this time (I was careful to phrase that correctly — see Part 8 of my series).
And I am far from alone. More than 100 writers have seen major increases in their readership because of Illumination. These writers are intelligent people, and their writing matters to them, and it matters to them that people read their work.
Illumination needs to be brought back. It’s not fair to take away the platform from all the people who were using it. If there was a problem with it, then we can address that problem and then restore the publication.
