Breaking the Cycle of Television Binge-Watching
Six ways I overcame my habit
Many shows contain dozens of episodes. You may discover a show you like to watch on Netflix or Disney Plus, which takes up hours of your time. Do you watch several episodes at one time?
There was a period in my life when I spent many hours watching shows on Netflix. Let me share my story.
First, why did I follow those shows? I realise that shows with a compelling storyline are both captivating and entertaining.
Our imagination leads us into a world of superhero stories, and we are eager to see how things turn out. As a result, we keep watching.
In addition to the many episodes in one series, there are seasons 1, 2, or 3. We entertain ourselves by watching television for many hours, and it never seems to end.
One day, out of frustration, I decided enough was enough. I needed a break from all this to pursue other activities in my life.
I worked on the following challenges:
1. Limit me to one episode a day
It was tough initially, as I was used to watching at least two or three episodes simultaneously. Gradually, with determination, I made some progress until I achieved the goal of one episode per watch.
2. Use the least productive time of the day to watch
Before this rule, I watched television whenever I needed a break, as I could work from home. With the change, I will watch television from 9 pm each evening.
After 9 pm, I will feel sleepy and unable to do any serious work. Watching television at this hour is less disruptive.
3. Complete other essential tasks before watching
I learned to prioritise. If there is a more important task before watching television, I must complete that task first. As a result, some nights pass without touching my television.
4. Stop watching if I find it boring or silly
Some shows are not worth pursuing because the story is so unreal that it insults our intelligence. The fact that I have started does not mean I cannot stop it entirely.
I also learn to spend time reading reviews before starting any upcoming shows. Objective reviews help narrow my choices to find a worthwhile show.
5. Don’t lose sleep by staying up late
Another rule I set for myself is not to watch after midnight. Once the clock strikes 12, it is time for sleep. To rest, I turn off my television.
6. I will unsubscribe for a season if I have to
Unsubscribing will be my drastic measure if all else fails. I will terminate Netflix if I have to. Fortunately, I could control my watching.
In conclusion, some things in life are entertaining, but if it negatively impacts our lives, we must act to restore our sanity.
I hope my sharing has been helpful. Let me know if you have learned anything of value to you.
