Breaking Down At 70MPH
I feared for my life
Being asked to pick up your boss's Tesla is not something asked every day; never have I driven an electric car before. I have never been a big lover of that brand. However, I was not going to pass up the chance to try it.
I was dropped off at the garage to see a white, futuristic-looking car that oozed class; my first impression was excellent, although not a practical car, I thought.
So I picked up the keys and had some quick instructions on how to drive the car; with the batteries charged, I was ready to have my first electric car experience.
It was a quiet and powerful vehicle, and I was impressed with its responsive nature; knowing I would be heading for the motorway, I was keen to see its acceleration potential.
I did not know what was about to happen, and I know, like mine, it is a nightmare that other people have had about the electric cars built today.
When the Tesla stopped, I was travelling in the motorway's outside lane, with a speed of around 70mph (113KMH). When the car stops dead, you see with an electric car when the power goes; just like a light switch, you are in total darkness.
The wheels do not keep going; they just stop, so I went from 70mph to zero in less than one second in an outside lane on a motorway. I could not even put my hazards on, as I had no power.
Thankfully, there was very light traffic, and I was able to get to the central reservation in the middle of the motorway; cars and lorries were just missing the car by inches, and there were a few close shaves, but the car was not hit; I was petrified all of the same.
I eventually got over the three lanes and onto the side of the road where I called for help; the police were first on the scene, slowing down traffic and closing two out of the three lanes.
You may not know, but with an electric car, you cannot toe it either, so they brought a crane in to pick the car up and take it away.
Tesla apologised and replaced the car saying it was a manufacturing fault, however from 2030 in the UK, only electric vehicles will be produced; I may have just found the first issue with them; if this happened to me, it could and probably will happen to others.
Have you had a similar experience? What are your thoughts on electric cars? Please let me know in the comments section.
