How to gain followers and get them swigging your Kool-Aid
“Are you happy?”
“Yeah, I guess.”
“But are you really happy?”
“I… Oh my god! I’m not!”
“I was once lost and looking for answers like you. My friends are having an event this Tuesday in our large opulent building downtown. Here’s a ticket good for one person.”
I had a friend who wanted me to attend her graduation.
“Graduation for what?” I asked.
“I’ve been taking classes that have helped me find true happiness. I want to share this amazing gift with you.” She said.
I drove to a large, impressive building downtown. In a classroom a half dozen graduates brought a half dozen people.
For two hours we listened to each graduates repeat the same thing. How amazing they felt now after forking over 800 bucks. Happy school they called it.
I wanted to leave immediately but didn’t want to upset my friend on this important day. It ended and I needed to get out of there.
“Well? What do think?” She asked.
“This is a fucking cult. I need to go. Now. You should cut your losses and do the same.”
They had their graduates invite their friends not to recruit us, but to isolate them.
She got mad, I stopped talking to her. She called me soon after to tell me she was no longer taking classes, apologized for making me sit through that shit, and our friendship resumed.
These are the methods used by organisations that will take all your money and all of your time. Then all of your real friends and replace them with conditional new ones.
First you need a message.
Origin story
You were down on life then a deity appeared. God told him to gather followers and wait for further instructions.
Throw in some mystical items. A miracle or two. Aliens. Time travel. Make it yours and own it.
Foundation of beliefs
There’s sex cults, doomsday cults, political cults to name a few.
Religion is the original cult and a good place to borrow from. Take what works like music, rituals, chanting, sense of belonging, and getting the kids involved at a young age.
Recruitment
Your ideal target are young adults finding their way in the world. College undergraduates at universities are perfect. They’ve been following the rules all their lives and did as they were told to be admitted. Legally they’re adults but inside they’re still kids.
The challenge is removing new recruits from their support system. Joining a cult is a great reason for friends to stop talking to you. At universities they’re already isolated from their family and close friends by distance.
Once they join, isolate them permanently. Occupy all their time with meetings that deprive them of sleep so there’s no time to talk to outsiders.
Love Bombing
Make the recruit feel valued. Give them a task then gush over how they perform it. Tell them how valuable they are. Have special tasks that make the people chosen to do them feel important.
Give them the love and feeling of belonging they weren’t getting outside. If they were getting it they wouldn’t still be here.
The promise of something more
Scientology is good at this. Give them thousands of dollars to audit you. They use probing questions while hooked up to a lie detector to find your deepest secrets and fears.
Make them pay for classes. If they don’t have money put them to work recruiting those who can. They don’t need money, they have you who provides the bare minimum for survival.
Brainwashing
You can’t brainwash people. But you can deprive them of sleep and starve them to make them more docile.
Cognitive dissonance is when a person has two beliefs that are in contrast to each other. Your previous religion is wrong. Old friends are now your enemy because they are opposed to your new life.
The person you were is gone. Your needs are irrelevant. The only thing you need to do is what they tell you.
If you leave, you leave with nothing, because you have nothing. They will never mention your name again.
Member retention
Find their secrets and use them against them. Have them commit crimes and save the evidence to blackmail them if they try to leave or act out.
When they do leave, never mention a word to your followers. Punish anyone who mentions it.
When I was growing up in Hollywood we had infinite Scientologists trying to give everyone walking down the street a personality test. My fathers line was, “I’m an asshole with anger issues so you better fuck off.” His body language told them he meant business.
If they approach you tell them firmly to fuck off. If they try to corner you, walk through them.
Don’t go to a meeting to see what it’s about. These people are good at what they do. It’s not worth the risk.
If you’re currently a member, I ask you this. Is the sense of belonging they’ve loaned you worth more than your family and freedom?
