Books (& Reviews) Completed In July

Book Review: Tanqueray by Stephanie Johnson and Brandon Stanton
Ms. Stephanie’s story captured me when she was featured on the IG page of Humans of New York. She is an excellent storyteller with a vivid memory of times past. The book gives the innate details of a life in entertainment. The story is fast and can seem to lack in areas. However, the transparency, authenticity, and clarity in the storytelling bring this story to life. A few life lessons can be learned from the book. The life of an entertainer contains two parts, but the private part/price is often overlooked by the common person desiring to be entertained. This memoir reminds you to cherish the moments of life because life can be over in a flash. Tanqueray is a quick read and I highly recommend this book.

Book Review Cashing Out: Win The Wealth Game By Walking Away by Julien and Kiersten Saunders
Cashing out gives you breakthrough examples, advice, and resources on how to walk away from the hold of corporate job life. The book gives insight concerning the "rat race" and its trappings. The book is not denigrating jobs, but invites you to see that multiple streams of wealth are needed to to walk away and embrace a life freedom. The most important concept of this perspective of this book is that the book addresses the unique challenges that black people face as we seek a better life. However, the concepts provided here can be used by everyone. Highly recommended if you have decided that you want life and life more abundantly.

Book Review: I'm Still Here: Black Dignity In A World Made For Whiteness by Austin Channing Brown.
I'm still here discusses the intersections of being black, female, and a believer in today's society. She invites you along her journey as she discovers how to love her blackness. Austin had her first encounter with racism at the tender age of seven. Austin outlines the involvement of white, evangelical, and middle class Americans in racism. Yet, she still dreams of a future with radical changes that begins with a foundation of love. I loved listening to her perspective and hope.
Highly recommended for all as we strive to make this world a better place for all.

Book Review: Homecoming by Dr. Thema Bryant
This was my first read of July. Dr. Thema addresses the mode of survival that people often fall into after bouts of disappointment, stress, and trauma. Dr. Thema gives you the tools to restore and return to the most authentic version of yourself. The weight of fear, shame, and trauma is so heavy and sometimes all we can do is survive the moment..the day... and the second. However, the book equips you with the tools to reclaim your time, reclaim your healing, and come home to yourself. A pivotal quote from the book: "Honor yourself for the ways that you have survived."
Highly recommended for those who want to walk in the abundance of life in order to live in the prosperity of love, power, and a sound mind.
