Book Review: Human by Design — Gregg Braden

From Evolution by Chance to Transformation by Choice

Quick Summary

Human by Design invites you on a journey beyond Darwin’s theory of evolution, beginning with the fact that we exist as we do, even more empowered, and more connected with ourselves and the world, than scientists have believed possible.

In one of the great ironies of the modern world, the science that was expected to solve life’s mysteries has done just the opposite. New discoveries have led to more unanswered questions, created deeper mysteries, and brought us to the brink of forbidden territory when it comes to explaining our origin and existence.

My Thoughts

I found this book to be a little strange. He proposes some interesting ideas, with scientific justifications, but precisely, these justifications are shaky.

In fact, I don’t think they are reliable. And this is annoying because one could very easily blindly believe everything in the book. There are not many references, and even though the ideas stated claim to have a scientific justification, in my internet searches I did not find much to support these claims.

From the moment you are told “if you don’t believe in my theory, your life will not improve and will have no purpose”, it is clear that there is a problem.

There is still a lack of solid scientific justification for the second part of the book, although I found it a bit more compelling. On the other hand, it is rather repetitive. As for the ideas now, it feels like a different book. We are in a different theme and the author dismantles some of his ideas mentioned earlier.

In short, this book could have been convincing if the scientific facts mentioned were more proven.

I had the opportunity to read “Why Evolution is True” by Jerry A. Coyne, which totally dismantles all the arguments stated in this book. And this time with real scientific evidence. So, who to believe? Everyone is free to make his or her own judgment, but I prefer to opt for what has been scientifically proven.

To Read or Not to Read?

This book was rather boring, either in the writing style or in the ideas stated. I don’t recommend it, or it might be interesting to read it in conjunction with another book with an opposite point of view like “Why Evolution is True” in order to open your mind.

But if you want to read it hoping to find new convincing ideas, it will not be the case.
