“Arise and photograph crack o’ dawn”

So, I did.

I captured the photograph end May at just before 5am, in the grounds of Jeskyns Community Woodland, Cobham, Kent, England.

I’d photographed around Jeskyns many times, so was confident I could navigate to my planned shooting location in the dark. But on this morning, with just a head torch and the amplified sound of my footsteps in the ghostly silence for company, the walk felt eerie. In truth, with a gently swirling mist shifting around the landscape’s slopes and dips, and then the still, hushed wait for the right moment, the experience started to become unsettling.

But capturing the blue hour sky with just the hint of sunrise I was hoping for between the park’s grand wooden totem statues in silhouette, made the planning, preparations, and the doubts about What on earth am I doing standing here in the pitch black on my own? all worthwhile.

If you hear the blue hour call yourself to arise and greet a new dawn, I respectfully urge you to take up the challenge. Get your clothes, camera, snack and a flask for your favourite morning drink ready the evening before, and go and capture that pre-dawn moment! You’ll be so pleased you did!
