Summary

The poem "Blossom" is a reflection on resilience and growth, using the metaphor of a seed that flourishes despite adversity.

Abstract

"Blossom" is a short free verse poem that metaphorically depicts the transformation of a person who, despite being mistreated and made to suffer, manages to find strength and beauty within themselves. The narrative begins with rhetorical questions directed at an unnamed party responsible for causing pain, implying a lack of understanding or foresight regarding the narrator's potential for growth. The poem reveals that the narrator, like a seed, was unaware of their own capacity to turn hardships—symbolized by dirt and tears—into catalysts for personal development. The ultimate outcome is one of triumph and joy, as the narrator emerges from their struggles with newfound vibrancy and freedom, much like a flower that blossoms after enduring harsh conditions.

Opinions

  • The poem suggests that adversity can be a source of personal growth and strength.
  • There is an underlying critique of those who inflict pain without understanding the resilience of their victims.
  • The narrator's journey from being buried in "dirt" and reduced to "salty tears" to a state of "blossom[ing] happy and free" conveys a message of hope and empowerment.
  • The use of a seed and its growth as a metaphor implies that resilience and the potential for beauty and positivity are inherent qualities, even if initially unrecognized.

What did you think would happen when you put dirt on me? What did you think would happen when you made me cry? I guess you didn't know I was a seed, as neither did I, and I would use that dirt and even the salty tears to grow some beautiful leaves, and blossom happy and free.
