NATURE CONNECTION
Blooming Thalia
“What’s in a Name?”
“What a beautiful name”, people say when I introduce myself. “I’ve never heard it before”.
I once heard a soloist named Thalia sing when I visited the Radio City Music Hall in New York City years ago, so naturally, I wanted to become a singer when I grew up. (hello, karaoke!)
But since I’ve never been to Greece, from whence my name originates, I’ve never met another Thalia.
When I explain my name is Greek, people usually assume that’s my origin. No, I’m an Irish — Welsh mutt, but my mom chose the name for its significance. I was brought up knowing my name, Thalia, means ‘to blossom, to flourish’.
It’s also the name of one of the nine muses in Greek mythology. Thalia was the Muse of wit and pastoral poetry.
Though my friends call me sassy, I have not cultivated wit.
However,I have incorporated pastoral poetry into my life by writing numerous poems highlighting nature, birds, and wildlife. Creativity and inspiration is at the heart of nature, just as it is at the core of any artistic form.
Nature inspires and evolves through rebirth just as the Thalia Daffodil, dormant in the winter, bloom each Spring as an ongoing symbol of renewal.
Wherever I have lived, I have planted Thalia Daffodil bulbs to enjoy. It’s an easy way to leave a part of me with each former home and to remind the new owners, “hey, Thalia lived here!”
Besides the name, I love it because of its fragrance and pale white blossoms. It has brightened up my yards every spring and it is the perfect symbol as a flower of renewal, joyfulness, and creativity.
Thalia …to blossom… to flourish… and stems from the Greek Muse of wit and poetry.
Grateful my parents taught me to live into my name!
