Becoming a ‘top writer’ in popular Medium topics takes a lot of, you guessed it, writing. Writing about those topics, with those tags.

Once you are a ‘top writer’ in a tag, the top writer status will appear under your profile picture with a list of the tags you are a top writer in. Here is my list.

When you reach top writer status, you will receive an email to the account you have linked to you Medium account that reads, “Congratulations! You are now a top writer in Books.” Like this,

Thrilling, yes.

It won’t happen if you are on Medium to post occasionally. I’d say you have to post at least three times per week to start seeing top writer status in the categories you write in.

To become a top writer, you have to publish stories in those topics with regularity adding Medium’s popular tags to your stories.

Here is a list of Medium’s popular tags that I write in with consistency.

I learned recently your top writer status can disappear when you haven’t used that tag in awhile.

So once you receive top writer status in a tag, keep writing and tagging stories with that tag to remain a top writer for that topic.

I have so many varied interests and get bored writing on the same topic. If I had to stick to one topic, I would never write again.

Below are other tags I haven’t written in, but want to. I’m so busy writing for the tags I’m already a top writer in, I haven’t gotten to these other tags yet.

Society

  • Education
  • Future
  • History
  • Politics

You can see from the number of tags, which Medium curates, you can find plenty to write about.

They are so varied; everyone has one or more topics they have an opinion on, even a strong opinion. So start writing in one or all of these topics.

Once you have a story, tag away, and be deliberate about the tags you choose.

Once you have top writer status in a tag, keep writing for those tags, and tag appropriately.

Knowing what topics you are a top writer in makes it a little easier to come up with a plan or an editorial calendar to follow. An editorial calendar is simply planning those stories you will work on for the month. It helps to brainstorm ideas for stories every day, or block out time once a month, and write your ideas on a calendar, so you have some strategy going forward.

Most successful writers follow an editorial calendar.

Use big tags (tags with a large number of followers) to increase your chances of top writer status.

Once you become a top writer, more people will follow you, read your content, and engage with you. Readers are looking for a trusted source; they want to know you know what you’re writing about.

With so much competition on all platforms — so much content — a top writer tag gives you that extra edge and is a great way to build a following for the Medium beginner.

Write on.
