Blessing for a Friend

Art by Keith Haring

May you be free free from useless suffering.

May you be free of threats both real and fabricated by a worried imagination. The mind may demand your focus on such things and sometimes you’ll feel helpless but to obey — I know. But often too we are only helpless if we believe it’s true. (Always reach out. There is no shame in needing help.)

May those who should right you visit no wrongs.

May your healing not depend on the healing of another, and know that your love can not force them to improve. Some people have no interest in healing. It is too painful and they lack the courage, or the care, or both. May you have the courage then, and the ability, to forge a future without them and their self-imposed limits on happiness. Yours may depend on it.

May you gaze upon your future with enough hope and confidence to feel content and secure in your present.

May your days and nights- may all your hours be complete with joy and laughter and requited love in good company.

May you remember and believe- which means to understand- That you are not your problems, your faults, or your fears. You are not to become them. Your curiosity, joy, and daily revivals are Just as much of you and more so, because no quantity of pain has managed to banish them forever.

May your friends remain near as a reminder of and to remind you that the above is true.

May you never feel the need to withhold your patient ear, or your courage, or radical loving-kindness from the world- it will never be without need of them.

May you feel that you are loved and trust that you’re on the thoughts of those who care as often as dust motes float through breezy air.

May you, my Friend, be free.
