Summary

Two brothers, Stephen and Keith F. Dennstedt, embarked on a 7 1/2 year world-traveling adventure, focusing on Eastern Europe with an emphasis on black-and-white photography, capturing the region's unique atmosphere and culminating in a single spot of color.

Abstract

In 2012, Stephen and Keith F. Dennstedt, as elderly men, began their extensive world travels from Mérida, Yucatán, Mexico. Carrying their belongings in backpacks and duffels, they journeyed through various countries for over seven years. Their travels took a poignant turn in 2018 when they ventured into Eastern Europe during winter, where the stark, monochromatic landscapes and architecture inspired them to focus on black-and-white photography. This artistic choice, they found, more powerfully evoked the mood of the places they visited. The narrative, punctuated with evocative images, is a testament to the brothers' quest to capture the essence of Eastern Europe's beguiling bleakness, with a singular photograph featuring a spot of color as a focal point of their photographic journey.

Opinions

  • The authors consider their black-and-white photographs to be more evocative than color images, particularly in capturing the mood and atmosphere of Eastern Europe.
  • The brothers' travel experiences are deeply personal and memory-driven, with their photography serving as a narrative tool for sharing their journey.
  • The article suggests that the bleakness of Eastern Europe in winter is fitting and perhaps even enhances the region's charm, as captured in their monochromatic images.
  • The photographic collection is presented not as a travelogue but as an artistic endeavor to evoke emotions and memories in the viewer.
  • The brothers value the power of photography to convey the potency and perfection of their travel experiences, as evidenced by the readers' familiarity with Stephen's photographs.
  • The piece hints at a preference for the evocative nature of black-and-white imagery over color photography in conveying the essence of their travels.

Black & White Worlds of Eastern Europe

With a single spot of color

From what I can determine, my brother and I always wanted to travel over the ocean to search for true adventure. At least, we gravitated toward standing on the shore, looking quietly out to sea. What we saw inside our heads is lost to time and imagination if not to experience and memory.

In 2012, as old men, we left the U.S.A. to begin our world-traveling adventures in Mérida, Yucatán, Mexico. For 7 1/2 years we traveled the world with everything we owned in our backpacks and our duffels. I’ve documented much of that adventure on Medium in my private publication, Exceptional Journeys, with accessory stories appearing here in Globetrotters. Readers are quite familiar with the power, potency, and perfection of Steve’s photographs.

In 2018, we began the second half of our adventure by traveling to Iceland, then slowly working our way down to Eastern Europe. Perhaps because we ventured there in winter, we encountered a kind of beguiling bleakness somehow fitting to the area. In any case, Steve also dabbles in black-and-white photography, which we both find to be more evocative than color. Eastern Europe was suitable for this pursuit, and this is what I want to share with you in this story.

That … and a single spot of color.

I think we’ll do this a bit randomly.

We traveled rather connectedly from Western Europe south. However, this piece is not meant to be a journalistic tour but a photographic évocateur.

I’m hoping these photos will evoke in you some feeling for the mood and atmosphere of the Eastern Europe we encountered.
