Bible Study Guide Day 350: Ephesians 1–6
But everything exposed by the light becomes visible — and everything that is illuminated becomes a light.
Ephesians 5:13
Ephesians 1
Ephesus is in modern day Turkey, and legend has it that Paul wrote this letter to the church while he was imprisoned in Rome. This letter is filled with encouragement, instruction, and reminders of our identity in Christ.
Praise for Spiritual Blessings in Christ
Paul opens by reminding us of our spiritual blessings in Christ — chosen, adopted, redeemed, forgiven, and sealed with the Holy Spirit. We are reminded that these blessings are not because of anything we have done, but purely out of God’s love and grace towards us.
Thanksgiving and Prayer
Paul goes on to express his thankfulness for the faith and love displayed by the Ephesian believers. He also prays for them to have wisdom and revelation in knowing God better, and understanding the hope we have in Christ.
Ephesians 2
Made Alive in Christ
Paul then reminds us that we were dead in our transgressions and sins, but because of God’s great love and mercy, we have been made alive with Christ. We are no longer separated from God, but have been brought near through the blood of Jesus.
Jew and Gentile Reconciled Through Christ
In this chapter, Paul emphasizes that all believers, regardless of race or social status, are one in Christ. We are no longer divided but are united as one body in Him.
This is a reminder for us to always strive for unity and love within the church.
Ephesians 3
God’s Marvelous Plan for the Gentiles
Paul explains that the Gentiles are now heirs together with the Jews, fellow members of the body and sharers in the promise of Christ. This was a revolutionary concept at the time, as Gentiles were previously excluded from God’s covenant.
A Prayer for the Ephesians
Paul prays that we may be strengthened by the Holy Spirit, rooted and established in love, and able to comprehend the vastness of God’s love for us. He ends with a powerful statement, declaring that God is able to do immeasurably more than we could ever ask or imagine.
Ephesians 4
Unity and Maturity in the Body of Christ
Paul urges us to live a life worthy of our calling in Christ, and to maintain unity in the body. We are reminded that we are one body, with different gifts and roles, working together for the glory of God.
We are also encouraged to grow in maturity and put on the new self, modeled after Christ.
Instructions for Christian Living
Paul gives practical advice on how to live as a follower of Christ — putting off our old self, renewing our minds, speaking truthfully, and forgiving one another. He also warns against anger and bitterness, reminding us to be kind and compassionate towards others.
Ephesians 5
Paul encourages us to imitate God and live as children of light, bearing the fruit of goodness, righteousness, and truth. He also speaks against sexual immorality and impurity, reminding us that our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit.
Instructions for Christian Households
Paul gives specific instructions for husbands, wives, children, and slaves, emphasizing the importance of mutual love and respect in relationships.
He also reminds us that our ultimate submission is to Christ.
Ephesians 6
The Armor of God
Paul explains the spiritual battle we face and urges us to put on the full armor of God — truth, righteousness, peace, faith, salvation, and the word of God. With this armor, we can stand firm against the enemy’s attacks.
Final Greetings
Paul ends with final instructions for the Ephesians and a reminder to pray for one another. He also sends greetings from his fellow workers and encourages them to stand strong in the Lord.
