Beyond The Finish Line: The Magic Of The Journey
Being a very goal oriented person, my tendency is to measure my success by being able to check items off my list.
For example, I work out a lot. My goals are some things like, reaching a certain weight, being able to visibly see toned muscles, etc.
There’s nothing wrong with having this goal. Where the problem lies is in the fact that fitness, and other lifestyle goals like it, are progressive. It’s not just about reaching a specific point but about continuous improvement over time where you experience ups and downs, highs and lows, all the while learning from the mistakes and celebrating the growth.
The main reason why it’s so important to focus on the journey more than the destination is because the journey is so much fun. The experiences you have, the people that you meet, it makes it all worth it.
The journey also teaches you patience. When it takes time to do something, it forces you to slow down and take in the beauty of celebrating the progress that you have made.
Here are some ways that you can focus more on the journey:
~Gratitude Journaling: Taking a moment to be grateful for what we have achieved so far redirects our attention from the future (destination) to the present (journey). Celebrating even the smallest milestones enhances our sense of fulfillment.
~Micro Goal Setting: Beyond the major objective, breaking it down into smaller, manageable milestones is immensely helpful. Periodic progress reports, whether quarterly, monthly, or weekly, offer valuable insights and keep us motivated. For instance, in my fitness journey, I regularly update my measurements and weight monthly and was delighted to discover that I had lost 2% in body fat this month!
~Mindfulness Practice: Taking moments to pause and reflect on the progress made thus far fosters a stronger connection with the present. Being aware of our current feelings and experiences can be facilitated through journaling.
~Trusting in Divine Timing. I’ve heard people say that time is an illusion. I used to think that this was ridiculous because time is real. We know that we will never be at the same moment that we are right now. But what I think they actually mean is that time is subjective. A person can become a millionaire at 20 or 60. A woman can start her family at 25 or 45. I’ve come to understand that it really comes down to the season that a person is in. I thoroughly believe that things happen when they are supposed to based on the season that a person is in.
~Detachment from the Outcome: Realize that multiple paths lead to any destination. Whether we choose the direct route or opt for a scenic detour, each path offers a unique adventure. Embracing this flexibility and openness allows us to welcome unforeseen blessings along the way.
Wrapping up, savor the present moment and find joy in the journey of personal growth.
Shifting our focus from the end goal to the ongoing process brings about a deeper appreciation of life’s experiences. Embrace the fluctuations, learn from the challenges, and celebrate every step of your journey. By living in the present and enjoying the process, you’ll discover that life becomes a far more enjoyable and rewarding expedition!
