Beyond The Area Of The Knowing
Ken and Ralph float away together.
Ken left his acting class early and went looking for the back room where he was set to meet Ralph.
“Ken! Down here!!” Ralph was shouting, but Ken could not see him.
Ken looked around, looked up and down the hallway, but couldn’t recognize where the voice came from. He wondered if he was being pranked.
Ralph had traversed the Area of the Knowing, but didn’t realize it. Or if he did realize it, he was too excited to make the connection with Ken, and so he could not make space in his mind to organize the possibility of Ken not perceiving the Area.
Damnit, Ralph! Where are you? I know he said it was a back room, and I really thought I had this entire building mapped out in my head. South end, behind the marble staircase, in one of the rooms with the funny brass doorknobs.
“Hi Ken,” Ralph said, startling Ken out of his conjecture.
“How the heck — um — hiya Ralph! I don’t understand… how you got behind me?” Ken said. Ralph looked at Ken longingly, then his eyes moved around and caught the reddish brown stain on the far wall and some movement to his left — was that a bug?
“Ken! Don’t worry. This can be confusing. I was willing to bet you might have come across the way to enter prior to now. But that was a bit nutty on my part, right? We only can know once we have been shown.”
Ken was intrigued. He felt that way a lot — like there were things hiding in plain site all the time. As part of his training as an actor, he was working on being more observant. Somewhere in his readings, maybe it was Stanislavsky? Yes, totally. The Magic If. Was that last semester?
“So Ken! Want me to show you?” Ralph asked. He sounded shy and assertive at the same time.
“Sorry Ralph. I was caught in a thought about my studies, and then before that I was all thrown off trying to locate you. But yes! Please show me,” Ken implored.
“You don’t have to ask twice,” Ralph said, with a funny twitch of his cheeks that totally reminded Ken of his character study on squirrels — but with a hint of Peter Rabbit to it.
Ralph faded from view just as Ken was watching that twitchy cheek, but then reached back and took Ken by the arm. “Over here!”
And there became here. In an instant.
Ken’s senses spun in a circle, awestruck. He had never seen such artistry. The room was musty but brilliantly colored in pastel hues. It was a surreal sight to behold, like Easter Eggs from beyond. Was it wallpaper? Or paint? And the textured images seem to dance about, no matter which direction he tilted his head or how he squished his eyes to slants and opened them wide again and again.
“Oh man oh my,” Ken uttered.
Ralph darted around the space. He was talking but Ken wasn’t able to hear the syllables. He just felt woozie all over. Titillated but offset from the norm.
“Hey Ken!” Ralph shouted.
Ken focused on Ralph. He felt relieved to see Ralph, although he barely recognized the guy he had met before. “Where are we and what the doofashle on snoofassy?”
Ralph bounced off the walls, laughing maniacally. He was a giddy goo while Ken struggled with vocabulary.
“Ken! This is what I wanted to share. This was where I thought we should hang out, but initially I figured you knew the way in. But I’m way more jackoloosey now! Because I get to show you stuff! And your first time, too!”
And I am seeing some stuff, Ken thought to himself. What a world.
“So I don’t wanna sound silly, but what is the point?” Ken asked innocently.
Ralph was bouncing ever higher in the romper room, and could not tell if Ken was asking a question that required a response, so he chose to bounce on through his defined calisthenics before acknowledging the question, which was likely to morph into something more refined, given enough time to hang in the air. At least he held out hope that Ken would elevate the question. Lost in the infinite access, Ken rolls into free space. Does Ralph have weird shoes?
“Ken, don’t focus. This seems counter-intuitive so you have to concentrate at first. But don’t focus,” Ralph says in his coaching voice. “Keep alert to your feelings more than what you think you see and hear!”
After a time, Ken lost focus, and felt with all his feelers.
Ralph squeezed his hand gently, but to Ken, the gesture caressed his very heartspace, and they floated together in a sea of jasmine scented water lily tears.
