Better Call Saul: A Brief Review

Is it just another disappointing prequel/spin-off?

From Los Angeles Times

Another disappointing and boring prequel/spin-off? No, it isn’t, rather, it is exactly the opposite of it.

Written and created by Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould, Better Call Saul is the prequel of AMC’s highly acclaimed (and arguably the greatest TV show ever) Breaking Bad. However, this introduction is not only misleading but disrespectful as well. Because, unlike most of the prequels or spin-offs, Better Call Saul runs on its own legs and it is mainly because of its own unique story lines and powerful characters, not because of this label ‘a-prequel-of-Breaking Bad’, that show has succeeded in receiving great reviews from the critics and galvanizing such a great number of viewers.

Thus, I can’t help but suggest that Better Call Saul is one of the finest TV shows and — pardon my enthusiasm — it deserves to be at least in the top 20 TV series of all time, if not higher.

Starring Bob Odenkirk, Rhea Seahorn and Jonathan Banks among others, AMC’s crime-drama thriller films the journey of ex-con artist Jimmy McGill, traversing his days from a small-time attorney to his alter ego Saul Goodman.

Excellent storytelling, gritty direction, masterful cinematography and passionate acting; Better Call Saul is one of finest TV shows ever produced.

Being a Breaking Bad fan, I never thought that there would ever be a TV series, related to Breaking Bad, which would be anywhere closer to it, let alone equally good. However, thanks to the creators of Better Call Saul, this series has changed my perspective. Mad respect for Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould for creating such a masterpiece and not making it look like just another prequel.

It is quite natural that those who have watched Breaking Bad might not give it the love it deserves, primarily because of the expectations. Also, with all this pre-existing knowledge, it becomes quite difficult to admire Better Call Saul. Nonetheless, if any of you haven’t watched Breaking Bad, which is highly unlikely, he/she would love this series.

All the episodes of the fifth season are now available on Netflix and to be honest, even after 5 seasons and 50 episodes, it still feels like I haven’t gotten enough of all this drama, encompassing the ever-interesting and complicated-than-riddles lives of Jimmy McGill/Saul Goodman, Kim Wexler and others.

Spoilers Ahead: We have finally gotten to know what actually transpired behind Jimmy McGill’s transformation into the Saul Goodman of Breaking Bad but still, there are number of answers, we are struggling to find. Therefore, the news of the 6th and final season of the show was a sigh of relief for Saul Goodman’s fans.

And in case you’re just getting started, don’t worry. There is still a plenty of time because it is highly likely that we will not be able to see the 6th season until the latter half of 2021. So, no need to panic, “Better Call Saul” while you still can!
